A deep question: why so many people here have cat avatars?

I agree. It's strange to me, as I've seen people argue that cats are completely incapable of communication. Yet, I have had cats communicate many things to me. They just do not communicate in human language.

Their signs are quite obvious to me, especially compared to humans.

Cats have an amazing communication, especially sound-wise.
It is proven (but I do not have a link now, because I read it long time ago) that cats as only animals keeps their "baby-language" and have a sound-spectrum consisting out of about 100 sounds.
I clearly hear the difference of their sounds.
I talk to my cats in a non-human language, but only sound-language containing fractions of spoken sentences.
They "react" (not the real word I am looking for but failing find the word) better than "trained dogs", because the cats do not react on a "demand following a reward", but on me reading them recognizing them reading me and them reading me recognizing me reading them.

They are fairly easy to read, once you´ve learnt their expressions.

I adore cats. I have four cats, three of whom are sisters I've raised since birth. Sadly, the sisters' mother, a stray I took in, passed away of breast cancer in 2011, only five months after we found her. She was the most precious cat I've ever seen. I miss her dearly.

I am sorry.
I lost a male cat named Louis who was 7 month old and had FIP on December, 21st 2007.
I miss him too.
I read a couple month ago, that there are clinical tests running testing a medication treating FIP and there were some positive results archieved.
It is an autoimmune-disease.

So ein lieber Kater-Avatar.
Ich erinnere mich auch noch an Deinen ersten Kaetzchen-Avatar (Entschuldigung, ich habe keinen Umlaut auf dem Keyboard).

Yeah, I don't really talk to cats in English. I mean I use words, but the words are not really meaningful. They respond to my voice, though, and I agree their interactions are distinct from dogs.

I didn't know they kept their baby language, although in retrospect that makes a lot of sense.

I have two stray cats that visit me almost every day, especially when they are hungry. They both have very distinct meows. I call them noisy kitty and shy kitty. When they meow to me I meow back to them exactly the way they do. We get along just fine.

I have Sackhead Bunny as an avatar, although I do love most cats. Sackhead Bunny is sad and lonely. He doesn't have any friends because people are afraid of him. He just stares at them with that creepy grin and slowly rolls his head to the side. Maybe one of these days he'll get a friend...

Also, this is why I like cats better:

Just wondering. Is there a relation between autism and cats?

I doubt it, every other person in the general population seems to have at least one cat. I don't really like cats. Here is a post I made in Random recently (it was in the "post your unpopular opinions" thread for obvious reasons!)

Quote:
I think pets are unhygienic. The only pets people should be able to keep are little things that can be (humanely) kept in cages (big enough for their needs). Cats and dogs for instance climb up on beds, furniture, tables, worktops. It's gross. When a cat rubs its face against you, it is wiping disgusting cheek secretions onto you, marking you as it's territory. Tomcats that are not neutered have a tendency to spraying urine up your walls. Cats bring in dead birds and mice etc. and lay them on the floor. Cats sick up revolting, slimy hairballs, claw your furniture and crap all over the gardens of other (non-cat owning) people for their children and them to tread in. Dogs slobber everywhere, chew your possessions, usually stink and hump objects. Dogs can spread toxicara. Cats can spread toxoplasmosis. Both can spread fleas into your home and leave their hairs all over your clothes and possessions.

Why anyone would want cats and dogs is beyond me. (I know some people do it for companionship but like I say, there are smaller creatures that don't have free reign to spread germs and vile things all over your home).

If there is some sort of affinity between people on the spectrum and cats, I doubt it's more prevalent than the general population, it's just for a different reason. I would imagine it's because cats don't make excessive demands, they maintain a distance unless they want some warmth (which is the only reason they want to sit on your lap and be stroked, it's not because they "love" you).

Here is something else I posted in the "post your unpopular opinions" thread:

Image

I don't see any similarity between cat behaviour and Aspies. Even if the odd trait superficially looks similar, I believe the motivations behind them are very different.

I'm not a cat, I'm a cat goddess.

And kamiyu, that video is brilliant! :-)

I don't care if you like cats or not, but that is just a fallacy.
Humans have emotions. Humans are animals. Other animals show signs of (and communicate their) emotions, so it is very likely that they do in fact have emotions too. Unless you argue that feeling love requires the higher brain-functioning that humans are capable of, which is our only difference from the rest of the animal kingdom.
