to borrow a bit from ogden nash, there is something about "autie" that sounds to me a bit naughty.

^ :)

As long as you don't use the term "autist".

The "ist" ending makes it sound like the person does their autism on purpose. Indeed devoted their life to perfecting their autism as a craft (like an artist, or a scientist, or an illusionist) so that folks could pay to come and see them do it.

somebody with more talent than me will have to make a little ditty featuring "autist" along with the descriptions you supplied above.

In other words: you're a "ret*d".

That's the label that you're telling us that you want.

Why is that ?

If you really are an aspie then the option to be "free of a label" is impossible.

The only options are: (1) labels like "aspie", or "aspergian", of "HFA" on one hand, and (2) being labeled something like "ret*d", "weirdo", or "sicko", on the other.

SInce you are denouncing the first group of options then you are embracing the latter group of options. Its as simple as that. One or the other. You know full well that there is no third option.

So why do like being called (and calling others) "ret*d" and "sicko"?

What is wrong with wording it as 'people who have aspergers', "i have aspergers' 'I am on the autistic spectrum' ? I disagree the only terminology options are to refer to ourselves as aspies or aspergian I don't particularly like either myself does that mean I think we are all 'ret*ds' to?

I missunderstood dillogic, and assumed that he was an "antilabelist". My point was that labels are niether escapable nor necessarily undesireable.

But he has some other issue. I guess he just doesnt like the sound of the words "aspie", or "aspergian".

Trouble is that- that is what the guy's name was who discovered it. So what can you do?

If Dr. Hans Asperger had changed his name to something like "Leonardo Di Caprio" ( I learned from Wiki that the actor is NOT a German-looking Italian American, but is in fact a German American with an Italian stage name- his birthname is something just as yucky as "Asperger", or as yucky as my own German surname) than we all could call ourselves "Dicaprians", or "Decapriaites". And either would be alot more melodic, and musical, sounding than either "aspie", or "aspergian".

If both suck to you, then what pray tell, do you propose to call it?

Have to agree with Callista on that one. Never even heard of "Aspergian" (surprised I can spell it correctly - then again maybe I didn't). Only use "Aspie" from time to time. "Autistic" is my go-to term.

I have made the decision to use "Autistic" when talking to people outside of the autism community. I use "Aspie" when talking with somebody within the community.
