i thought the same thing. the mtv people probably told him to talk slow to make him seem more "autistic" even though i talk 1,000 wpm

Maybe. But who knows, maybe he really talks like that. He just didn't really seem like he had AS though. I know it varies greatly and all, but everyone else I've known with it has been more outgoing and spoke faster and thought quicker than him. I think he had a mis-diagnosis.

I must say I doubt MTV is in it to promote awareness. If you have seen MTV there is always a ratings bent to it...what will attract the viewers. I can see this having a negative bent.

Exactly what I said earlier, Mtv is there to brainwash elitist numbskulls and trend whores who have the intelligence of a grapefruit. Mtv is only looking out for their own interests, theyr looking to make money at our expense.

This is true with any network station/news program/newspaper/magazine. Unless they are a non-profit group, but they still have agenda's too.

The purpose of the news is not to present facts, but to present facts in a way that brings in the most advertising dollars.

Oh, he definitely looked AS to me. When he got nervous, his speech suffered a lot. But when he was able to relax he was much better... and on stage somehow his quirkiness worked for him.

could be ok, but this is MTV we're talking about. Hopefully it educates people about the issue, and doesn't use it as freak show entertainment.

Well when all you post is 'stay away from MTV, don't watch it, MTV is as evil as Hitler'. Then admit you are watching MTV, yes you look like a hypocrite.

I dont think anyone is qualified to make that judgement based on one programme and based on the aspie people they know out of an entire world of aspies. My ex spoke slowly because he was thinking through his responses carefully.

Now I know why I don't watch MTV. I found the three autistic teenagers to be caricatures and stereotypes. I too, found Elijah annoying. Every so often, he did speak in a normal voice during his routine. I think it is a bad idea to talk about his autism up front. I found it offensive when I said, "I can't do this. I'm autistic." The credo of my life was "can do" and "must do."

I thought the art of the savant was dark and horrible.

I agree about the kid with the light writer. He should find friends here. In some ways, he seems smarter than most of the typical kids.

Apatura,

I noticed the same thing about their teeth, especially Jeremy's. That boy seems to be quite intelligent despite his lack of speech. They all need their teeth fixed.

I kinda liked the show. It didn't do any kind of "cure" stuff, which was nice. It was, at the very least, a positive change from the "Autism is evil; we must cure it now" stuff you get everywhere else. I don't think it is a bad thing to tell someone you're autistic, or to even make fun of yourself. If you aren't comfortable with yourself, then no one else will be, and the quickest, easiest way to get people relaxed is to get them laughing.

I too, am glad they didn't push the "cure" but I did find it interesting that the artist did want to be more normal and wished his brain wouldn't get all fuzzy. I often feel that way myself.

The art savant was pretty scary, very dark. I don't know about "horrible."

I've been thinking about this show still and have the following thoughts:

+ Why, given all the amazing technology available, does the lightwriter (sp?) have such a horrible screen and hideous robot voice? Surely it could have a brighter, more user freindly screen (and the keyboard didn't look great either), and they could find a more human sounding voice? I get automated calls from the library that have a real man's voice but the words are patched together. Yes it sounds stilted but it sounds a whole lot better than that robot voice.

+ Why, when the artist savant had meltdowns, did the dad get all close to him and start saying "Look in my eyes"? Surely the father knows it is hard for autistics to look in people's eyes? Doesn't this just make it worse?

+ Again about the artist savant: they said they had tried every medication under the sun for their son. How do they not know that the meltdowns aren't being caused by some cocktail they presently or formerly gave him? Has it even been considered? They said the onset was very sudden. Maybe he was reacting to psych meds.

I did not find them to be caricatures.
