Synths and samplers are fun if you just want to play. And, they can be actually cheap. Even the cheap ones can have little sequencers that let you record keystrokes and get playback. Really fun if you like music like Alan Parsons (early years) some of "The Who", "Art of Noise" etc......

Anybody who can sing, well, I am instantly jealous. That is the one thing I can truly say I wish I had as a talent. Just to be able to sing, even if not professionally, without hurting the ears of people far and wide would be a blessing to me.

I used to play oboe professionally, but also have a degree in Music Ed, so I learned to play everything. I find musical instruments really fun, and easy to figure out within a few minutes. It's the one thing I was ever good at.

Sorry for the arthritis...but still soooo jealous. A good kind of jealousy though. Not avarice. I've known those who resented someone who is talented in ways they are not.

I sing and play the keyboards. On a good day, I'm an okay musician. On a bad day, I tend to hear what I should be playing instead of what I'm actually playing. Selective audition. lol

I was a very good trumpet player when I was younger, but that only required co-ordinating the movement of the fingers on my right (dominant) hand with tonguing the mouthpiece.

Any instrument that required independent movement of both hands, like keyboards or any string instrument, or even drums, forget it. Brass instruments were perfect---I also dabbled on baritone horn/euphonium.

I can play any musical instrument out there as long as it has a "demo" button on it.

Oddly enough, I can finger the strings on a guitar, Never been a strummer, more of a picker, but have to play my keyboards one handed. Keep it in perspective, I'm not very good at either, but it's strange. When I played at drumming (MANY years ago), it was a real pain to try to get the hands and feet all doing different things, but still be coordinated for total beat. I do have excellent rhythm though. I have to work into that octopus movement very, very slowly though. I really want an electronic drum kit to fram around on. Low space requirements and headphones. Won't torture the neighbors or more importantly, the wife.

I can play a variety of brass and some woodwinds. I always hated playing though, the bright lights, the as*hole band directors (no offense Ashariel), the bratty kids that never practiced and expected you to carry the performance all the while denigrating you...yeah it wasn't for me. That being said, music theory/composition is my favorite subject in the world, I've been studying theory and writing since I was 14. Love it more than life itself, must be my autism showing.

Well, one thing I've learned is that autism has many variations, mine happens to be the highly systemized data driven type and music is merely a repetition of patterns with alterations, so it's very fulfilling for my mind. You're right though, there are others on the spectrum that will have difficulty even playing an instrument due to motor coordination skills. To each his own, they will have other abilities I myself wouldn't be able to learn if I spent a lifetime.

I was referring to my literal translation of 'love it more than life itself' and thinking of a sheet of music and a meal on a deserted island.....I think you would eat rather than play. Sorry, that was my warped thought process.......
