Aspie's collect the darnedest things
I have some old Russian advertising posters. I had them framed and hung them on my walls, and they are a symbol of a proud nation that was (or a reminder that the US won the cold war and I can gloat about it when I talk political talk with my close friends).
I have an old piston from a 1972 Briggs and Stratton lawnmower (9.02 cubic inch engine, 3.0 horsepower).
I also have some Scientology stuff. An E-Meter, some books and CDs (L. Ron Hubbard really doesn't make much sense to me, maybe I have to have a 1950s mind-set to understand him -- you know, the thetans/spirits that blew out of a volcano and are now responsible for all that's wrong with you). I also have a 10-foot vinyl advertising banner "PORTLAND DIANETICS DOT ORG" that looks good in my basement/man-cave. I am grateful that Scientology is winding down and NOT sapping the spirit and the strength of very many people anymore.
I also have old keys to my parents' cars, cars that they no longer own. When I was very young, keys were a symbol of power and responsibility - things that grown ups, like mommies and daddies, had. The little pieces of metal, and the cars and houses that the keys unlocked, were awesome. Today I am grateful to have these things myself.
Funny story, when I was very young, I used to collect ashtrays (for sale at tourist shops in the states where my family spent various vacations). I always knew I would never smoke, but I had no idea how unpopular smoking would be today. I threw them out some years ago.
