I see music this way. Chords and scales on visual instruments like piano and guitar make up "pictures" on the instrument and I categorize them in my mind as they relate to each other.
Also in sequencers when I composed electronic music I would memorize patterns by the pictures they made on the screen.
I'm not really musically gifted to begin with, but I have an affinity for pattern recognition. I learned that way and had enough drive to eventually transcend being borderline tone-deaf
I think this is why video games like Minecraft is so popular among autistics. The cubes make patterns and you memorize geometric shapes to make up the parts of buildings so you can quickly recall parts from your mind and then put them together. At least I think like this when playing that game.
