We have one large library in our small town and it's getting too crowded with all the kids and families that come in there...especially on the weekends.

I have often wondered if I should have pursued a career as a librarian. I think I would have enjoyed it more than what I ended up doing. Have you found that the homeless use your library as a pseudo home? I feel sorry for them, but I have wondered if that could be a depressing part of working at a library.

I used to haunt libraries. Great for study of special interests. That was back before the internet. I would still visit them if I had more time.

I used go to my local library often until recently. I had misplaced my library card so I went in to enquire how to get a new one, the woman asked for my name and went through my records on the computer. It turned out that a book that i had already returned without any issues was handed in late and i had a fine to pay. I apologised for this and told her that i had no issues with paying the fine but this was the fist time i had been informed about it. Instead of dealing with the issue at hand which was me getting a new card she went on to lecture me about how it was a public service and people like me should not abuse it, her attitude and arrogance was unreal, she was talking to me as if i was some kind of vile criminal. I interrupted her mid sentence, as politely as i could i said goodbye love and walked away, though inside i was fuming. Since then i not stepped foot in the place nor have I paid my fine.

I love libraries. At school and college I used to spend my lunch breaks in there. I don't go to the library much anymore except when I want to borrow a book that I can't find in a books store.

I LOVE libraries. And museums. I have worked in two libraries. I currently work as archivist, and have also worked as a researcher. If I did not like libraries I would not have a job right now.

IMO, the library became obsolete with the Internet and broadband.

Agreed. We had a beautiful library in a historic old building, but the building was deemed "not earthquake safe" as well as being a bit too small. So now we have this huge box, which the city is very proud of, because of it's cyber cafe and eco-friendly carpet. But it's not the same. Also, they decided they wanted it to be a "community" place, by which they mean that people should feel free to sit around and gab at full voice.

How ridiculous. My academic library has around two million dollars worth of for-a-fee databases that I can access from home via internet and I still need to use the print collection. I will borrow a thousand dollars worth of books and DVDs every week. If you figure the internet and your personal collection make the library obsolete, it's because you don't want/need/know how to use a library.

I don't like to stay in the public library much, because of the noise, but the academic library is nice and quiet and I'll hang out there a lot.

I don't actually need to stay in the building at either of them to use it fully, though. My libraries (and very likely, yours) allow you to place a hold on materials over the internet. I just go in to the public library every week, pick up the stack of stuff that's been set aside for me, and leave.

If your local library's collection sucks, you can probably get them to borrow things from another library for you. Inter-library loan.

If I need information, I can look it up online. Any books/novels I want, I just order them online from Amazon or something. I don't go through books very quickly, but I like owning them rather than renting. I never rent anything because in the end, it doesn't expand my collection.

My usual outing consists of a library visit or my favorite bookstore Barns & Nobles. Books bring me great joy, and I love the library.

However, sometimes I can get sick and dizzy when looking at all the books. Sensory overload or something.

I never sit in the library, though. Just brows the rows and rows of goodness, and then check 'em out.

Ah, there are a heck of a lot of things I can look up online, and a whole bunch of other things that I am SOL to find out without those expensive dbs that the library subscribes to, and books.

I go through books way too fast to buy them. Or keep them all while still having room for me in my house. Some day I hope to have a bigger place, and install high-density rolling shelving so I can have more books, but I still wouldn't want to buy them all.

I have to say, anybody who is in an academically intense profession knows libraries are not obsolete. For example in law, as good as westlaw is, it is much easier to use if you are familiar with the west system of library organization. Anything that relies on an academic journal is no different.
I will say also that librarians and archivist know research methodologies on the internet better than most IT people. Simply put we know were stuff is, and know which sources are reliable.
While newspapers may become obsolete, libraries, especially academic libraries, never will.

I like libraries but, I'm not fond of the fact when you see a bunch of kids sabotaging the computer systems by downloading a bunch of well-known spam and other internet threats as such.. Also, libraries are meant to be places of quiteness well, someone screwed up cause, it drives me nutty to hear something loudly speaking on a cell-phone for crying out loud.I'll admit that I have a cell-phone but, I always step outside of the libary to either make or answer cell-phone calls as, I choose not to get on anyone's nerves and respect other people's right of privacy and peacefulness..
