My IQ is below average, and average in other things. I am not genius at all. And I am not being hard on myself. I really know that I'm not a genius. I even get annoyed when Aspies here try to tell me that I am clever.

Actually it's worse in some ways due to the truly misguided attempts in our educational system.

Things like the arts being cut while sports gets more support.

The lack of consistency in our science education.

The lack of recesses and gym classes where kids burn off energy and calories.

So much is worse now.

One step forward and two steps back. It would help if the social warriors would just back off.

No you don't!! !

Do not say that again or I shall unleash a horde of posts aimed at your way to say that it doesn't matter. They do not measure anything.

You do not suck!!

You don't suck. An IQ test only measures what it measures. There are things that matter so much more in life which you excel at. Don't beat yourself up over IQ and stuff that does not matter. You are a person who is dedicated to loving the people you love. You sacrifice for them, you do things for your family that I would never even be able to dream of attempting. Those things are so much more important in life than the measure of someone on paper. You are a very inspiring person by the way you live your life. And I would not say that if it were not true.

I remember you saying you scored 75 so is borderline intellectual functioning a disability in the UK?

The guy who designed the IQ test only intended it to be used to determine if someone needs help learning and discouraged it's use as a way to rank intelligence.

You've mentioned a few times that people have thought that you aren't smart, and that your IQ is not high.

I've always gotten the impression that you are intelligent, and especially that you have a lot of common sense. A lot of us here, even with high IQs, don't have a lot of common sense. I know that I often don't, and that I can be quite naive.

Intelligence depends on how one measures it. What's "intelligence"? Is it having a fantastic long-term, short-term, or working memory? If that's all that one has, it's not very useful. A memory alone is only storage. Is intelligence the ability to solve complex problems, the ability to make good observations, creativity, attention to detail, visuospatial skills, interpersonal (social) skills, "emotional intelligence, "common sense"?

I think that all of these things are important, even though not all are tested for during IQ tests. I'm not sure an IQ test can accurately measure the abilities that it does test for in all or even most people, anyway. Some people (like me) get very distracted or anxious during IQ tests. Learning disabilities can skew the results. So can problems with motor skills, hearing, or vision, if they aren't accounted for. Not getting enough sleep, not feeling well, or being in a poor mood can (and probably will) negatively affect the results.

League_Girl, I too, have always found your posts to be well written, very thoughtful, insightful, and very intelligent and I also think you have a lot of common sense. I have learned a lot from you over the years.

Around the time I was diagnosed on the ASD graph, the IQ test moment came along I failed the whole thing effectively because sat with the clinician, I would look at each question & start arguing with him about the possibility of variables to supposed finite answers & the effect of immediate sociological impactors present at any given moment on an individuals mechanism, thus negating his/her ability to answer effectively. IQ test results can also improved upon by practice, like many things, so how they can be regarded as a scientific fact of intelligence is beyond me.

I gave my clinician a headache, but before I left I showed him how to solve an complex algebraic problem in 5 moves. He couldn't do it in 50 moves with an IQ of 130, so using an IQ test as a measure of intelligence is pseudo science. Medication, mental state, something bothering you, the amount of sleep you had, your attention span on that day - all these can also impact how you score on any test, including IQ tests. Also, not all ASD individuals, display logic/pattern spotting talents, so will walk away feeling low from a low IQ test score, but that same individual may next week, make a leap in human thinking that changes the course of science...

If you are happy being you OP - this should be enough.

There was nothing in the testing that I took that would have even opened up that line of questioning.
