I got my license when I was 17, the summer before my senior year of high school. I just wanted to drive, I liked my independence, listening to whatever music I liked without my mom yelling at me to turn it off because they were talking about sex.

I love driving, especially that I got a newer Honda Civic that has a backup camera that's great in parking lots when you're parked next to a bigger vehicle. For me, driving is a necessity as I'm in southern California which still doesn't have as good of a public transit system when compared to other areas. As a result, I've had to learn to drive in heavy traffic, which was recently considered to be one of the worst areas for traffic in the US. It took a couple of tries to pass the written test, but I was able to pass the road test in one try. I did learn to drive somewhat later, in my late 20's because a job counselor suggested I would have an easier time finding a job if I drove. I now see why that was suggested because it means I'm not bound by bus or rail schedules when it comes to a job so I might get chosen over someone who doesn't drive.

I do not drive. Although My eyesight is good enough for the test My sesitivity to changes in light mean it would be dangerous to do so.

Public transport all the way or driven by friends is how it has to be.

Yes and no. Ive seen people with Asperger's suffer with anxiety when it comes to driving. I am just a bad driver andI dont have aspergers. I hope everyone learns to drive, even if they cant drve far away.

I absolutely love to drive. It is one of the few pleasures in life. And I just so happen to be good at it. 8)

Hi, gang. Has anybody here found Asperger's Syndrome to be a hindrance in learning to drive? I passed the written test, but during driving lessons I couldn't make fast judgments, perceive distances between my car and others, and I was terribly anxious throughout. Whenever I got to an intersection it took me so long to figure out who had the right of way that my instructor had to tell me. (I understood it on paper but in real life I couldn't think of it fast enough.)

I also found driving unbearably boring, so boring that one day the combination of stress and boredom caused me to black out at the wheel. That's right -- I actually fainted for a second. The instructor had to hit the brake. I failed the road test three times and finally gave up on the whole thing. I was too afraid of causing an accident and of becoming a target of road rage. (I have a very hard time with being shouted at.) I felt I just didn't belong out on the road with other drivers. All through this whole thing, I never knew I had AS. I wasn't diagnosed until 2010.

It no longer matters because I can't afford a car anyway. It's sad, though, because I would've liked to become more independent and have greater mobility.

Do you think my lousy driving was related to my having AS? Has anybody else had this problem? Please discuss. Thanks.

Higgie

IMO, It's all chaos
