The idea that it's dehumanizing; I suppose it is simply because Aliens are far as we know aren't human beings.

Yep, that literal autistic thinking again :D

That is how it SHOULD BE, but that is not the world I live in. In the one I live different from the norm often means being othered. I am the big outlier here but I don't agree with helping bullies other me by sort of agreeing with them.

Weird, the alien figure so many in this thread do not like I barely notice, I guess I am not one of those visual autistic thinkers.

No disrespect to Alex, like I said the positives outweigh the negatives here. If he wants to ban me for insurrection, his right. That I have at times criticized his decisions on his site without punishment is a credit to him.

Spock is basically the patron saint of autistics.

Agreed.

Historical note: The "alien" metaphor dates back to the very beginnings of the autistic rights movement. See, for example, the following, both by Jim Sinclair:

- Autism Network International: The Development of a Community and its Culture
- Don't Mourn For Us

Thanks for the historical information.

I hope one day the "alien" metaphor is just that, history. If it is going to happen we will have to initiate it, not wait for the NT world to accommodate us. It is obvious we are not close to being ready for that. It is probably something we won't see in our lifetimes, but then I never thought I would see gay marriage and positive trans characters on TV so who knows.

I see your point and I'd say I existed in that once as well. Actually I think an actual alien would have been more wanted/accepted more than I was in many cases lol I suppose I made a choice to define my own reality about it. So I don't see it as helping bullies by agreeing with them. Typically when I have agreed "yes I am unusual" and been non reactionary it tends to disarm them. (Granted I've been lucky to not encounter the violent ones). I am odd, weird, strange, otherness, an outcast, on the outside looking in and although that can cause some loneliness it's part of what makes me, me. It also beats the hell out of being boring or being a crappy person. I demand respect as a human, a weird one or no; if it's not rendered I finish my business and leave them in the gutter they've chosen to sit in.

I do tend to be a visual thinker but my not caring for that specific alien is purely do to my personal aesthetics. Also it having glasses and a magnifying glass seems excessive lol

I don't consider myself alienated now, as I have made quite a few friends, just far behind in accomplishing regular adult milestones.

Wrong planet sounded just like the feeling that caused me to register here.
There are more important things than changing the name of this page.

Over the course of time since I joined Wrong Planet in 2006, I have come to the realization that being an outsider is absolutely okay even though there are many people just like me who feel different.

So no, I am against changing the name of this website.

The curious name caught my eye when I Googled Autism forums, made me think of the way I felt, unlike some of the more formal names out there.

"Wrong Planet" certainly describes the way I felt about my existence in earlier years... and to an un-ignorable degree still. The name is strongly-worded and attention-getting.

On the other hand, I don't want everyone to feel perpetually stuck on the "wrong planet". There are no viable alternative planets. We should not feel like or be thought of as foreigners or fugitives here.

On the third hand (if you actually are an alien and wish to keep count), maybe the name "Wrong Planet" is only meant to be a playful invitation. As in, "feel like you're on the wrong planet? Come visit us and find out you're not alone." That scenario satisfies my previous objection.
