Har! I immediately wondered if it was a trhead about wearing my sweatshirt inside out and mismatched socks. All the time, I admit it.

What about the wrist bands a'la "LIVESTRONG" for Lance Armstrong's testicular cancer. I've heard of doing Orange for Apergers, but all I've seen available were made of string.

I totally dig the WP T-Shirts...they look good in 420 mode, too.

I especially like "I've been good, can I go home now!"

and "Autism Rocks"

I got some orange jellies in packs at Wal-mart. They came in packs of 3 colors and one pack had 2 shades of orange. Also they have some plain, orange, silicon bands in the grocery stores here. I buy 'em when I can find 'em.

I'm also a weaver, and like the woven bands. You can find instructions on the net for finger weaving and tablet weaving, and you can put figures and words into those.

I would wear an AS t-shirt in public. Actually I am going to.

My mum just bought me this t-shirt:

And she got this bumper sticker for her:

I read somewhere that there's an "Autistic pride day" or something. I seem to wonder if there's an Autistic Pride Parade or Autistic mardi gras like the gay and lesbian mardi gras...

Wearing an aspie t-shirt, I might as well just wear a t-shirt saying "Hey, cool dudes, I'm a pathetic loser so beat the sh** out of me and make my life hell". The only difference is that most people don't know what asperger syndrome is...

Not that I had many problems with jerks trying to single me out in school, luckily. By the time some did try it with me, I had a 'death stare' working that made them shy away from it. It made them find me to be unpredictable, and oddly enough a little intimidating, so they backed off and nobody gave me any nonsense after that.

Excellent. Serves them right.

The idea for an Autistic Pride Parade came from the same place as the idea for the orange wrist bands - Gareth and Amy over at AFF. They seem to have a knack for coming up with grand ideas that sound great for about 10 seconds and then don't many any sense at all.

I have one of those orange bands that Nike sells. Most of the sports stores sell 3-packs so I just hunted around until I found a 3-pack with orange in it (it was quite rare for a while). When you think about it, though, what possible use is an orange wrist band if every kid in North America is wearing them and the colours mean absolutely nothing to them? I see lots of people (mostly between the ages of 10 and 16) wearing orange bands and I doubt any of them have ever heard of AS. When people see mine I don't get the impression it suggests anything to them, either. I also have the blue bracelet with the puzzle pieces on it. At least that one has a unique meaning so if I ever see another person wearing one I'll know they at least have a clue about ASDs. I'd like to see someone come up with a unique symbol for AS. One idea would be to mix-n-match shoelaces, so that one shoe has blue laces and the other shoe has orange laces....

The other brilliant suggestion was to hold an Autism Pride Parade one week before the Gay Pride Parade, and to use the rainbow flag as the symbol for the Autism "Spectrum". Numerous people on AFF objected to the use of what is universally recognized as a symbol of homosexuality, particularly for an event that's taking place at the same time all the Gay Pride Parade advertisements are everywhere, but Gareth and Amy were adamant that gay people still wear pink triangles and the rainbow flag can be used by anyone. I'm all in favour of having a parade, but there's no point in doing it if it's done in a time, place and manner that nullifies the message.

The orange wristbands were from Aspergia. Autistic Pride Day was from AFF.

I like the idea of Autistic Pride Day better than I like orange wristbands. (I don't like orange.)

I have about six autty wrist bands (that I don't wear terribly often because the feel of them sometimes bothers me).

I wouldn't mind wearing an Aspie t-shirt. However, I fear buying Ts online because I am so incredibly picky about the fit/feel of them that I have a hard time finding ones anywhere that reach my standards. Plus, I tend to veer away from white t-shirts. I don't like how they look on me.

I did like the "I don't obsess I perseverate" t-shirt though.

Next year, there should be an Autistic Parade.

A neat symbol would be cool, but I would want to make sure it was unique -- that is, not something that would be confused with another group / cause / concept. I read something about orange bracelets a while back and thought that was a decent idea, but then I read somewhere else that orange bracelets could also be used to symbolize "self injury" -- gah! I don't mind if people know I'm an Aspie (hey, it's better than "crazy disturbed person" which is close to what I used to get) but I don't want them thinking I slice my arms up. I know that SI is a real problem for some people but...it's not me and I don't want to identify with that group.

Sean wrote:
It's not a good idea for anybody to openly talk about self injuring behavior in public, at lest offline that is. I wasn't aware that they had a ribbon. Maybe hardly anybody else is either and so there isn't any stigma to it?

THAT I would be opposed to because it's a desrtuctive behavior that you can control- at least when you start. And that's the other reason I'd be opposed- SI is f---ing addicting, and I know from experience. I've been off it for a year, but I don't need a bracelet, I have enough scars to show that I was into it. I still crave sometimes, and when I see people who look like the cut, I want to cry.

I would definately wear it, especially the sweater. People think I'm odd anyway so wearing an aspie line of clothing wouldn't change their mind. I once had a t-shirt I got when I was in an in-patient psychiatric program for teens. It read, "I made the Journey at the Mid-South Hospital."

I wore that t-shirt everywhere, except while accompaning my mother as she was too embarrassed by it and refused to have me go anywhere with her while wearing a shirt advertising a mental hospital.

It can be such a joy to embarass people in public because you have no sense of embarassment yourself. I know this because I long ago gave up the idea of tryin to appear to have dignity and just go with the flow as much as possible.

chamoisee wrote:
Why not? I would love to wear aspie t shirts. I have no problem going public with being aspie.

See folks, here is the way I look at it: people are not going to be aware that not all auties are profound unless the fact is shoved in their faces, and they are reluctant to accept it anyway. I think that positive publicity is a very smart thing to do. Just don't wear an aspie T shirt and use your diagnosis as a reason to act like an as*hole, please.....

I would never do that- I mean, i would wear the shirt and act like an as*hole but it's entirely my fault. ;) Though I might point at the shirt when someone tried to hug me and I flinched. Maybe. ((But that, I think, is fair.))
