I cut my own hair. I wear it straight down, about chin length. I just cut it straight across with scissors when it's wet. Not saying it's great, but it's not bad. When it's damp after a shower I turn the tips inward with my fingers so the dry turned inward slightly, and it mostly camouflages any unevenness. My hair is wavy so that too camouflages unevenness.
I haven't been to a hair salon in over 30 years. I think it would make me very uncomfortable to have someone messing with my hair, though I think it would be doable. I also feel awkward the entire time, not knowing what facial expression to make, even if I don't talk.
When I was a kid (about 9) and was having my hair washed at a hair salon, one of the workers actually said, "Look at the face she's making!" And I didn't even know what face I was making.
