I've been on a gluten-free diet for a while, but only because eating wheat gives me cystic acne. Aside from not getting cysts, I still haven't noticed any positive changes.

I've seen only shreds of evidence, aside from anecdotal reports, that the intake of gluten has any effect on spectrum disorders. In the absence of firm evidence, I don't agree that people should necessarily extol the benefits of particular diet just because they personally believe they have felt positive effects. The problem with anecdotes, is that when one reports that a certain benefit results from doing X, the benefit may be due to X but also may be merely coincidental and caused by any number of other factors. That being said, a gluten free diet obviously won't hurt anyone.

I personally don't see much wrong with gluten except that foods containing it tend to be loaded with carbs, which when eaten to excess make you fat. I'm a Type 1 diabetic and try to limit my intake of breads because they make my blood sugar skyrocket.

It does make a difference eventually, but you have to be patient and keep it up.

I've had periods when I didn't eat much of anything (including wheat and dairy products) for days on end because of having virtually no appetite. There were times when I'd eat practically nothing but apples. It didn't make me any less weird than I have always been. If anything, it probably made me even weirder because not eating well doesn't have a good effect on me.

Perhaps it's something that helps some people and doesn't affect others at all.

Same here. I'm already on a no wheat and no dairy diet because they cause me to breakout.

I have felt less anxiety and depression but thats about it.

Almost 3 months gluten and dairy free. My brain feels clearer. I feel more connected to people, more caring or something, and haven't had the unpleasant noisy jabber in my head since stopped. Feel more connected mainly, to concrete things outside my head, at same time as calmer IN my head.
Totally get mizmusic's experience. It literally sends me out of control sometimes. I go manic, for space of few hours or a day, just on one dose; totally lose touch with people except as ideas, intolerance of weakness, etc. Scary. Which is why been excluding again for last 3 months. Going to give it at least a year. So can see what effect it has in long term.
Been posting on the Gluten-free Diary and Support Thread on Members Only , whenever noticed anything new, or been in a downer about cutting it out ( miss it , or long for it, or think it might solve something to start again! Get a buzz!).

As far as gluten goes, I'm not surprised that people are really starting to have problems with it!

Apparently, wheat has been HEAVILY modified over the last 20-30 years... it's supposed to only have 7 chromosomes, now it's between 20-23 chromosomes.

I'll have to research that more, but I'm sure the details are under pretty heavy wraps... :(

[cursing heavily] razzin-frazzin-bargin-fargin genetic bloomin modification!!
