I've had a few sadistic teachers. It was more traumatizing that mean kids because the teachers were in positions of power. Sometimes, as an adult, I imagine cornering them and asking them how they can live with themselves, finding joy in traumatizing vulnerable kids?

My daughter was told she was weird by her 5th grade teacher. I told the principal who was a friend. She was NOT invited back that next yr. AHHHH, how sweet that felt to get rid of that old bat.

You're my hero! I wish more parents who do what you did! You saved a lot of other kids from being traumatized!

Yeah I had 2-3 horrific teachers in elementary school. The worst part is, unless the teacher rapes a student, they will never get fired, and the school always protects the teacher before the student. Sad, really.

I'd love to say you were wrong, dude.

There were at least 5 times I had been assaulted by teachers before I was 10, for stuff like staring off into space or motor tics. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

I had a teacher grab a chair and throw it past my head in a rage because she enjoyed my terror, I guess.

My former US History/Economics teacher loved to punch me in the shoulder because I was concentrating on my work. She enjoyed it and no longer works at my school.

I think the only bully of a teacher I had was a gym teacher (surprise, surprise). Actually, there was one other teacher now that I think about it. I wasn't a very good math student and, honestly, I'm still not. I'm only really good at algebra. Anyway, my third grade teacher would often give us worksheets with various problems on them and we'd have a set time limit to finish them all. Most of the time once time was up I'd have about half the sheet done and I'd get an F. Then she would have us stand up when she called our names and say our grade aloud so she could get it written down in her grade book. I asked her if I really had to say I got an F in front of the whole class and, of course, she said I did. It continued on like that until the end of the year.

I may not have had a lot of bully teachers, but I had a lot of teachers that let peer bullying happen. I'd often be getting stuff thrown at me or I'd be getting called names, but the teacher would do nothing about it even though I'm certain that he heard or saw. A number of times I got really upset and yelled at the bully and I ended up getting in trouble. Where was the justice there?

Those are the worst of all. They WERE bully teachers, they were just extra-cowardly - hell, they had to get other kids to do their dirty work for them. It got them off to have that kind of omnipotence, like they were a god and the classroom was the entire universe over which they had dominion.

I think this is great that more people are coming forward and acknowledging the abuses they have suffered. This takes a lot of courage.

And teachers bullying kids CAN be as traumatizing as rape. Too bad that more school administrators don't recognise it.

I agree with your fist sentence %100. In some ways, it can actually be worse, because all the authority figures band together, closing ranks against a small child.

In regards to your second sentence, I'd have to say that it is in their best interests to protect the teacher rather than the student. Teachers have unions that can make life hell on a principal; kids do not. In a purely amoral, problem-solving sense, it is better for the principal to take their side. Incentives are incentives, no matter how perverse.

I think it is really important for people to know the ways in which they have been hurt. If you don't understand social dynamics, you will not understand how you are being mistreated, and will self-blame.

Here's a short blog entry I made about my school life over a year ago. This was written prior to my diagnosis with AS.

School with Satan

Warning, this blog contains strong coarse language and themes that may offend some people.

I went through 12 years of school with no one bullying me at all (most of them protected me from other student bullies). Granted, by the time I got to 7th grade, I wasn't doing all my work regularly (most of it was either too asinine for my notice or was too hard I just gave up.) After this point, teachers pulled me aside and tried to question why I didn't do work and yet still aced every test put in front of me, for example.

This streak was broken my senior year of High school, where I had this one particular English teacher who was just a general dick to everyone. In the beginning, he generally left me alone, as there were other people who he enjoyed making fun of more than me (and I covered my own ass by making fun of someone else, which seemed to direct his attention away from me for some reason.) The actual problems started about halfway through the year, when I publicly announced that I thought he was a jerk. He promptly kicked me out of class (twice). My mom and I complained to his supervisor (who was a friend of my mom's) and he was basically censured concerning me, although we basically hated each other for the remainder of the year, and he still had free rein to torture anyone else in the class.
