How do you know he is autistic?

Gosh, you're right: I haven't seen his medical records. Should I delete my post?

Yeah, that sarcasm was really justified. I mean, it says autistic right there in the thread title! What more proof could you need?

Anyway, the video was awesome. Made my chest all warm and such. :)

Excuse me, all I did was asked a curious question. I clicked on the video twice and it took me to the website and I didn't see the word anywhere so I asked the poster of the thread how he knows? Did he hear about it somewhere? Was he told, was it on the news and they mentioned the word, or was he just judging based on the way he talks?

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough. I was trying to out-sarcasm his sarcasm. The point I was trying to make was that

1) Just because it says "autistic" in the thread title doesn't mean the guy in the video is autistic
and 2) Obviously since UncleBeer put "autistic" in the thread title he knows whether the guy in the video is autistic or not, so it woulda been alot simpler for him to just say yes or no than to attack you.

:)

Well I dont appciate this individual being on hi high horse claming hes better then everyone else because AS is better then this or not. If people with AS struggle to be accepted by others why are we then pointing out that were better then someone whos blind, cognitvley impaired, deeper into the autisitic spectrucm, etc.

Dude, it doesn't seem like the person to whom you were responding was being an as*hole. He's simply acknowledging that people are categorised by society and it would be ineffective for this community not to do so as well, despite our desire to view everyone on an egalitarian plane; this is not a negative mindset. The mindset becomes negative when one others a category of people. I think that, on an autism (minority) community, we are in little danger of othering one another, as we would be othering ourselves.

Your rhetoric seems to be primarily emotional. If you have a problem with something that someone says, you (and the rest of this community) would be better served to logically refute it instead of making a post of inflammatory language.

How is what I wrote an "attack" (or are you being wryly sarcastic again, and we're missing the humor?)? I admit to finding Spokane Girl's question cynically skeptical; I'm not used to having my word questioned in such a blunt manner. And as I say: Google would have satisfied her "curiosity" in a split second (I know: a lot to ask). :?

Kitsy and BlueMax, I was pretty clear that I was directing my comments at people who agree with BlueMax. That was the subject, of course that would be what I was discussing. Again, the bolded quote of mine doesn't contain any insult. Blue Max, you said you didn't want to be lumped in with someone who "'seems' handicapped", that is what I quoted and what I feel TheZach was addressing. So, I don't know why you would "wonder" what's wrong with your comments.

Quote:
Can it be agreed that someone with AS is NOT immediately recognized as having any "conditions" until a few failed attempts at certain communication?
Can it be agreed that it can be frustrating to gain understanding for AS when people expect some type of "autistic" display (as seen in the young fellow in the video) and dismiss your claims because you don't have those type of conditions?
You see where I'm trying to go with this???

This is why I made reference to "seeing videos, photos, and read posts" of people here. I don't see a difference between us and him. AS is in the DSM-IV because it's seen as a disability, a disorder. The man in the video had a flat tone and nervous laugh. Those can definitely be autistic traits, if we're solely going by the video. So, it doesn't really make sense to elevate oneself and say, "I'm not like that!"

If you were really trying to say that you're frustrated by others not realizing you're handicapped, I can understand that point. The truth is, that's the problem with autism awareness. There is not enough realistic information out there. How many Hollywood movies are out there that are overtly about autism and Asperger's? Three? (Rain Man, Snow Cake and Mozart and the Whale) and two of those are obscure. People generalize about all sorts of stuff they don't understand. And that's their problem of ignorance.

But please understand that your original statement and the ones that people on this thread were defending is quite different from the above quote.

Uncle Beer, I'm sorry if you're seeing my post as inflammatory too. I mean to defend the video, it is heart-warming.

Okay, I understand where you are coming from now. I think people can have loads of misunderstandings and it results to internet violence, hexing and voodoo.

That's very noble of you to see "just a person" and not someone affected by autism, or down syndrome, or horribly scarred by voracious, mutated, ill-tempered sea bass. Unfortunately, your rose-tinted vision is shared by very few on this planet. People are different, and are treated differently as such. It's often totally unfair, but That's Life - I'm sorry. I wish EVERYONE would put on rose-coloured glasses and share your outlook, then NONE of us would ever face rejection!

YOU (and Zach) are hearing something DIFFERENT from what I am saying. Coloured by your own pain (I presume.) So while I say, "The two syndromes are different from each other and when people hear 'autism' they think this, not that." YOU hear, "Ha ha! I'm sure glad I'm not haaandicapped like that guy! I'm so much better than that!!" That is YOUR perception, coloured by YOUR experiences and YOUR pain. That doesn't make my words wrong - no matter how you may perceive them. I've gone through the same thing, where I've been overly sensitive to innocent comments or gentle criticism because of my own pain. I've had to learn to heal that pain and DEAL with the world I live in!

I imagine this whole ringamarole would have been avoided if I'd just sugar-coated everything I said. In hindsight, I could have avoided it altogether, now knowing just how sensitive some people are about autism.

But I haven't done anything wrong, even if you think I have. I apologize only for unintentionally triggering your painful emotions. I hope can understand I don't hate autistic people, or point and laugh.

All the best,
Foot-in-mouth-guy.

The sarcasm you wrote, you were being a smart ass instead of just answering the question. I think that's what she was referring to as an attack to me. I was not trying to upset you when I asked.

BlueMax, I'm not presuming, making assumptions about you, please return the favor.
You said this,

Quote:
This fellow "seems" handicapped. I don't like my condition being lumped in the same category.

And that is what I addressed, that you don't want to be compared to him. This has nothing to do with rose-colored glasses, "my" anything. Really, that kind of psychoanalysis is insulting and digressive. And I never said that I see "just a person. . . not someone affected by autism. . . .". I said I see an autistic man and there is no qualitative difference between him and anyone else here that qualifies for an AS/ASD dx. There is nothing noble about that perspective.

I know Zach. It's like, why don't you just stop being so cold weather. But nooo, it has to keep on going and being cold.

It's a good thing that blankets exist and furry creatures.

Seriously, internet fighting is the gateway to voodoo.
