Do you watch the news?

In the UK and I tend to watch the news on the BBC (sometimes ITV) but never Sky.

However I think generally there is so much gloom on the news these days it makes things very difficult to watch.

Yes, I watch the evening news every night. It is one of my routines. However, I am almost always doing things on my laptop while the news is on. So I'm really only listening, and only giving the broadcast part of my attention.

I like following politics but I have an amused detachment from it. I view presidential election years as sport, much like the Superbowl.

Watching the news is something that I do almost every day. I need to know what is going on in the world. Can't stand a lot of politics news - especially seeing that stupid Donald Trump anytime I see a political segment. I still think that the news does have too much fluff however - who cares about what happened with the Kardashians yesterday or today!
Weather is mixed. A lot of times, our meteorologists get it wrong. They'll say clouds and 65, but then it will be showers and 60. What gives?! The best meteorologist, in my opinion, is yourself. Look out the window in the morning, and that's the weather forecast.

I keep up with the news via various online sources. I "watch" the news on tv by turning on my bedroom tv and setting the sleep timer...

I have been living off grid off and on all summer with spotty internet/4G service... So I have not been up to date with the news...

Had an unfortunate run in with the RCMP (Super lame throwback police) because I dont have ready access to the news.. an amber alert went up over the abduction of a little girl and the murder of her father.. the get away vehicle the perp used was a white van.. just so happens that I drive about in a huge white van... here I am, 30 miles into the bush and mountains, 5000+ feet up off the forestry service road.. I have to use a 12 volt cell phone signal booster just to make a call or post here.. I am ISOLATED!! ! and here come the RCMP.. in the middle of the night.. zero light except his headlights... I cannot even tell who or what just pulled up... just lights and a voice from the darkness..

Cop: "Your van was seen leaving Blairmore!"

Me: "No it wasnt, I was in Cranbrook at the vets all day, who are you and what do you want?"

Cop: "Yes your van was seen leaving Blairmore, the scene of a murder and child abduction"

By this time I have figured him to be a cop or a person of authority, though he has failed to identify himself to this point..

Me "I was in Cranbrook and here. I have receipts and video...." He cuts me off

Cop: " Dont you watch the news?!?!? You have got to be the most ignorant person I have ever met!!"

yeah, super nice guy, would be a shame for him to fall into a bottomless hole... I thought quietly to myself..

The rest of the encounter went downhill from there, I barely managed not to get myself arrested...

I quit trying to empathize with him and the situation the moment he straight up accused "The van" of being somewhere it wasn't..

Cop: "Dont you care that a little girl was abducted?!?! WTF is wrong with you?!?!?"

Me: yeah I was still reeling from the onset of the encounter, full F*CK YOU mode.. straight into shutdown

My lesson here: Listen to the news while driving a white van?!?!?

Feel bad that I mangled that encounter, but, I am not one to dwell either..

Downside, The girl was found dead, really messed up situation...

Upside, today I found some gold and had a run in with the biggest black bear I have ever seen.

if it doesn't have some relevance to me or my life or my existence, which most of it doesn't, it just becomes meaningless noise and data that streams past my eyes and muddies the waters of my mind.

besides, most of it is just propaganda.

To those of you who elect to remain completely unaware of the status of society, I have a few things to say:

1. The world is screaming full speed toward an Economic and therefore Social and therefore Political and therefore Military CRISIS/COLLAPSE that will affect YOU personally.
It will devastate you and your family and your friends and total strangers.
Life as you know will be changed and the status quo will not return for many years if ever.

2. I share your distaste for the News given its extreme negativity and sensationalism, but your lack of preparation resulting from your lack of understanding of the true status of our society, will have consequences.

3. Good luck, your gonna need it.

no, I don't have a tv or a computer. when I go places with internet access (work and school) I look up the news I'm interested in through alternate channels than what I'm assuming is still on tv.

I have to agree with Slave. We need people of conscience to follow current events and participate in the political process.

At the same time, I sympathize with those who get overwhelmed by sources of negativity and despair.

Maybe it's because I am doing relatively well at this point in my life, that I can detach from the tone and ignore the chaff while picking up the substance.

I will watch if there is something I am specifically interested in, Jeremy Corbyn's victory in the Labour leadership. But I don't watch it generally because the bias is usually right wing and I can't cope with the demonising of certain groups, lying politicians, celebrities and worst of all the suffering of people. I am not usually interested in other countries either, which also puzzles me, a human is a human.

I have in the past become obsessed by trying to help people who have become victims of neoliberal policy, I hoped I could do something about it.

Sometimes I watch the local news, cable news I try to avoid entirely, I mainly keep myself informed reading various news aggregates online(drudge, RCP, twitter, ect)

Media outlets like TV and newspapers are sources of brainwashing with the intent of controlling what goes into your memory and how you think. It's the spread of dangerous memes.
I don't read newspapers and haven't watched TV in many years.

I am not unaware I read journals and use forums where I can learn of people's real experiences. I just don't watch the news and rarely read news papers because of the right-wing bias

not on a daily basis, not much anymore, its too boring
I like checking Bill Maher or Jon Stewart occasionally
or buy sometimes Le Monde diplomatique or more often Le Canard enchaîné with it's witty writingstyle in contrast with the ordinairy newspaper with its boring standard jokish wordings.

I read the Daily Telegraph online, as much for the comments as the stories. I agree with a previous poster who suggested a big economic collapse is coming, and I think it helps to be aware of what the main issues are.

I did obsessively read and watch news related to the global economy for four years, but it kind of made my bad anxiety worse, Im currently on a media blackout.

Not sure how brief it's possible to be on such a huge subject, but you have to consider:

1. Government debt - £1511,000,000,000 in the UK, $16,000,000,000,000 in the USA, proportionately even more in Japan. Only being kept 'under control' at present by virtually zero interest rates.

2. In the next recession, interest rates will almost certainly have to go negative, which will be difficult to enforce without the abolition of cash. That will be a major step in making us all slaves of the government and banking system.

3. Generational conflict - zero interest rate policy has made house-ownership impossible for most of Generation Y (or the 'Millenials', people born after about 1980) in many Western countries. If interest rates can't be raised, this will get even worse. In the UK, a large proportion of this section of the population is at the mercy of 'Buy To Let' landlords.

4. In a future recession, governments might have to resort to desperate forms of Quantitative Easing (Debt Monetization), which could destroy confidence in currencies. Hyperinflation is very much on the cards in those circumstances.
