Recently, as I am sure you are all aware, the amount of people claiming to have Asperger's without actually being diagnosed, has risen. Now, this really makes me mad. Just because you are an eccentric, antisocial nerd with nearly no friends does not mean you have a disability! You are giving the REAL aspies who actually are making an effort to improve their social skills, a bad name. If you are so sure that you have AS, go and get yourself diagnosed. If you do not do this, you are in my mind, and probably in the minds of many other people with AS, not an aspie by default.

Just because you are an antisocial geek does not mean you have AS, and vice versa.

Not as scornful as I thought it would be, I must be losing my flare :P

Your only 16 years old and shouldn't concern yourself with other peoples business, for some having a DX may mean losing their health insurance, or prevent them from getting a job, some really don't want the stigma of being labeled an Apsie, I haven't even told my closest friends, only my family doctor knows, there is still alot of misconceptions regarding aspergers, and I don't intend to use AS for a label

So the OP is F.O.S.

Exactly. The psychiatrist I spoke with last said basically that here I was, having an deep, intelligent conversation with a strong vocabulary, as though Aspies are the opposite or something.

I enter this post into my official book of evidence that people don't think and are merely instantiations of a group consciousness.

While some Aspies (diagnosed or not) may suffer from ED, I think it's best to avoid thread drift. We can always start a thread on ED in the Adult Forum.

HA! that was classic, Velodog!

I think anyone can learn to have a deep intelligent convo with strong vocab. I know some NT's people who can't do that. For all I know I could very well be a NT.

From the friendly DSM-IV-TR:

Quote:
Asperger's Disorder must be distinguished from normal social awkwardness and normal age-appropriate interests and hobbies. In Asperger's Disorder, the social deficits are quite severe and the preoccupations are all-encompassing and interfere with the acquisition of basic skills.

A professional is the one who determines the "severe" part of Asperger's, and "normal social awkwardness".

I'd probably be considered a fake aspie by the geniuses in the mental health profession.

I'm not interested in memorizing bus schedules, and I'm capable of understanding why a bus system exists.

Odd....I told 2 people at my school who are good friends with me and they don't care/are cool. Even though I said 'autistic' rather than aspergers.

Then again one of them has ADD or ADHD and the other guy might have that.

Ah yes, I've read quite a few articles on them...really sordid stuff :x

It makes me a bit queasy just to know that people like that really exist. I think the worst part of it all for me is that none of them feel remourse or anything...it's all very matter-of-fact.

OMG I just read all of that and at the beginning I had the desire to tear this guy a new one, then he apologised, then you guys kept ripping up his statement...

then I got to twoshots' post and I started cracking up and laughing and clapping.... and now I can't remember what I was going to say(and you guys said it all anyways)....so this is now my post...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

oh and Asperger's first made an appearance in the 1994 version of the DSM, I think it was DSM IV.... I would have been 10... I am self Dx'd, with a free appointment at the Veteran's Administration to talk to a Psych sometime this year. I asked for the appointment last week (that is not a joke).

I must apologize for not taking financial matters into consideration. I live in Norway so....well, fill in the blanks :)

We supposedly have free health care in Canada but we still have to pay our health premiums, and prescriptions are still very expensive here, its real bad in the States with all their HMO's, I wish they didn't have to live like that down there, thats what I was taking into consideration, when it comes to being Dx'ed for AS

EEEEK! Run screaming (whilst carrying scissors). Sorry to OP ster. I'm sure you didn't intend to instigate this....tirade?

I know! Let's rename this thread: "AS Conspiracy Theory"

Personally, I have a disorder: Autism. Disorder is a state of entropy. I am therefore entropically favored. NTs are just jealous. So there.

I have a written Dx. I think I'll scan it and start distributing as windshield flyers. Then, I'll frame it for display in my lab. I have a medic alert ID bracelet.....I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

I just checked. It's not a full moon tonight. Geez everyone is touchy tonight. Or angsty. Yes, angsty is better. I'm going into my bedroom to have a meltdown....sigh.

Yes, Lab Pet is exercisng that sardonic wit to lighten up the situation.

Above thread, "No, I'm more autistic than you!" "My Dx exists!....in the Bermuda Triangle." "I'm sicker."

Mental Scream. Now, group hug. Oh wait, lets NOT. Aspies don't do huggies. Instead, stim to your satisfaction.

Yes, doctors are infallible.

What about those of us who have researched various disorders AND spoken to others our how they see us, and everything points to AS as the best explanation? What about those of us who've sought help because the problems caused by what looks remarkably like AS, but who aren't taken seriously because we look relatively normally in a structured clinical setting? Is the OP trying to tell us that our struggles aren't real?

Interesting that you should put it that way! If each "professional" determines what the words mean, they lose meaning and science becomes art and little more than merlins magic. There has to be a STANDARD, and I thought that was what the DSM was supposed to help with. After all, if you have to decipher the meaning of the words solely with your OWN background, you might as well not have them in the DSM.
