Asperger's, the Law, and POLICE
You are in Canada aren't you? Write to you member of parliament and ask why recourses are being spent putting you under surveillance based on unfounded claims.
Hey equals,
That is excellent! I never would have thought of it myself. Now here's something to put my writing skills to work

Glad to be of help.
What about contacting a human rights group? They might even offer some legal help. How long have you been under surveillance? I don't know about Canada but I believe in the UK they have to provide information as to why you are being put under prolonged surveillance if it is the ordinary police, rather than special branch or the secret services. They might need permission from a judge to keep you under surveillance. Chances are they can't do this indefinitely.
They may be 'protecting' you, in which case you can tell them you don't need any.
I've had mixed experiences from the police. The Hampshire police were pretty good when I was assaulted.
The Met (London) are no so brilliant. I remember being put under suspicion just yards from my house, just for walking with my eyes trained to the ground. They tried asking me where I lived. Like I'd seen them up here too often. Many time I though I could go, but that kept trying to ask me more questions, staring me in the eyes. If they knew anything about my neighbourhood or similar they'd know that then number one suspects for a breaking are the cowboy labourers who do work for the yuppies in an almost continuous stream. They are not going to rob the house they are working on, but they can observe all day who is coming or going. There are a lot of houses, and these labourers get paid in cash and are not tied down. Other than that leafleters might find a car do left open and have a rummage in the glove compartment.
Tip on not getting robbed, don't put valuables in view. it would seem obvious but some of these yuppies still don't learn. Another cleaver trick is to get a second door bell as if the house id divided up.
Another time I was going down to my local tube and I witness what turned in to a fight between two people. It turned out remarkably to be an argument over the price of an illegal DVD. What happened is they jutted out in front of me as I started walking, from a side entrance to a block of apartments near the tube. There started fighting. The one guy appeared to have something of the other guys. He began making his move, the other guy was trying to get it back, run after him. He got a length of PVC wiring cover and smashing it over his head, and this fractured with fairly superficial effect. Then the other guy got some scissors out of his pocket and stabbed him in the neck. The guy was pretty luckily, or he had a hard neck (probably done some iron neck training), the scissors didn’t penetrate instead they buckled. The stabber then tried to play the innocent victim and say the other guy attacked him unprovoked. I was probably one of the few to see the actual stabbing, and almost certainly the only one to see the whole fight from the start. He concealed the scissors in his hand and then when over to a bus stop and sneakily on placed on the top of a bus stop. The other gut couldn’t speak English because he was a Chinese immigrant, and his opponent was clearly on drugs, classic wasted away crack and smack look. The remarkable thing is it happened and started just literally next to a police station. As I was one of the first to see where these people had come from and followed it all the way through I was taken down as a witness. Anyway the MET were pretty casual about the affair. Quite slow to get in touch. I’m not sure my evidence amounted to much. The Chinese guy was not interested in pressing charges, checked himself out of hospital. They did tell me that they couldn’t interview the other guy immediately because he was coming down.

Hey equals,
Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm not familiar with legal channels for whatever I am dealing with but I know I've been under surveillance for over a year. I too thought they needed a judge's permission but OTOH that edict might have been one of the changes after 9/11. I'll certainly do some finding out over the next little while.
You may be right about them "protecting" me -or that's the best-case scenario. One of the members of the group I described above holds a 4th Dan black belt in martial arts and carries Nunchuku sticks at all times. Apparently, this man has physically ruined a few people so far, including a friend of mine who also has a disability.
The said group's motives are hate-oriented. They see all challenged individuals as "wasteful eaters".

I don't care for most cops, but everyone on here should remember that they are pricks to NTs as well. The type of people that gravitate to this job are seldom the brightest, and few could be expected to know anything about AS. They do tend to assume that weird behavior is an indicator of criminality, so many of us will fare poorly in encounters with police.
I feel like I understand cops better than I understand NT civilians. I tense up when I know cops are in range, and tend to focus on avoiding doing things that attract their attention. I know the pitfalls of talking to cops better than the general social pitfalls of being AS in an NT world. So I haven't done too badly in my encounters, although I loathe those interactions.
I haven't had much interaction with police, but one thing that helps is to be polite and they'll treat you the same way. If I was accused of something worse than a traffic violation, I'd tell them that I won't talk to them without a lawyer there with me. After all, innocent people can say something that could lead to them being falsely convicted of a crime.

What types of surveillance do they do? how extensive is it? I'd be curious to know.. thanks.
L
As far as I am aware, they are monitoring my telephone and internet activities and they have watched from unmarked vehicles.
Do you know this FOR A FACT? If you dont I would say that sounds a little paranoid

Oh... One more thing:
I contacted the Canadian Radio and Television Commission and e-mailed them an inquiry on a suspicion that my phone line was being tapped. They didn't tell me specifically who was tapping but the reply reads as follows:
Thank you for taking the time to contact the CRTC.
The law pertaining to the interception of communications does not fall under the CRTC, but is under the Department of Justice jurisdiction.
Below you'll find a link to a section of the Department of Justice's web site. It's actually a section linking you to the Criminal Code of Canada. Scroll down to Article 184 entitled Interception of Communications, and subsection (1) when it does not apply.
http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/c-46/text.html
I hope this information is useful.
Here's a more direct link:

Scroll down to Article 184. Any lawyers amongst you WP'ers?

I have been the target of suspicious persons reports and Ive also been questioned by the Cops on 2 urban University campuses. However I have never had any serious trouble with the police nor have I had my place of residence subject to search, thankfully. It doesnt suprise me that Aspies are viewed by police as being suspicious persons or potential criminals.
Nightbender-WHY and HOW did they midiagnose you with Bipolar disorder and put you in the loony bin?

Im sorry but that is just plain Ignorant Claire!

Im perfectly well aware that the Police are necessary but dont forget that they are just PEOPLE in a position of power and its naive and stupid to think of them as being saints. Police view their job as not just enforcing the law, but enforcing the social norms-including the social order. Police are WELL KNOWN to treat certain citizens as potential criminals because of their appearance and/or behaviour.

In general, they've treated me with about as much respect as they showed for anyone else. I just keep my mouth shut and don't speak unless spoken to. If I disagree with something, i'll argue it in court.
The only bad run-in I had with the law was when I was eight or nine years old. One of my friends dads was a cop and one day he found a lot of things from his truck missing and a shirt with my name on it in the back of his truck. My friend came knocking on the door and told me his dad had sent him. I went over there, not knowing what to expect and as soon as I got to his house, his dad was up in my face yelling out at the top of his lungs. He accused me of stealing tools from the back of his truck (because kids love electrical saws and drills) and the caps from his tires (what would I do with those?) He created a huge ordeal and eventually my mother and stepdad came outside to see what it was all about. He started threatening to send them to jail because of my actions and telling them he has a witness who saw the whole thing. He had us on his yard until the witness came by after work and said the boy in question was older.
Maybe you should've consulted your witness first numbnuts!

Doesn't that sound like this series?
