Where I live getting your licence at a lot older than 18 (legal age) is common my mum was 25, dad 30, brothers were 21, 20 and 23 I was 28 got it last August in auto. Dont feel too worried about getting it older in life TBH I think it makes you a better driver.

I'd say most of the cars in Britain are manual which means they go well above £3000.

What sort of quality are they?

Over here, a car like this will cost about £27920:

A car like this will cost about £6000:

I'm talking about new models though.

Manually shifting is wretched in stop and go traffic.

I think the general rule in most places is: pass in a manual, drive any transmission. Pass in an auto, restricted to an auto. (unless a new test is taken in a manual)

You CAN change gear without pressing the pedal, but it takes great skill. It's great to have this skill if the cable or hose brakes.

Nothing wrong with changing gear in stop start traffic. Depends on the length of the clutch release fork (the shorter it is, the heavier the pedal seems to be) I've bought all the parts for making mine "lighter"

thanks catster ...not worried about it at all. quite happy actualy. any earlier and my wierd life trajectory might have included another stint in prison - but for manslaughter or dangerous driving.

I know that in the U.S. once you obtain the License you can legally drive any transmission.

I think that if I ever drove on a manual, I would destroy the engine... even my brother who drives a manual every day to school/work drives the car so shakily it scares me! (the sudden jolting of the car got so annoying that I told myself to never try a manual)

Even driving in an auto I get the pedals confused sometimes (far better now than when I was learning though) I would end up hitting the breaks when I meant to hit the accelerator. Luckily it was never the other way around! I don't want to imagine any confusion that is likely to happen if I were ever to drive a manual...

Keith is right in most countries what he says is true in the USA being different as always it apparently isn't LOL. Like how they have NTSC DVds and a lot of the world have PAL.

You won't destroy the engine, it's mainly a powerhouse, it's the operator that determines the ride. Usually coming off the clutch too quickly can cause all sorts of problems, like kangaroo starts. I do think that the arrangement of the pedals in a right hand drive as in the UK is far better as the clutch pedal is closer to the gearshift, which makes it easier to remember. It will always be that the brake and throttle are on the right which is the ideal placement for a race set up in Group B and N Rally cars

Manual transmission, all the way!

- More control, especially in nasty weather.

- Less maintenance. When something goes wrong with a manual transmission you/they can often isolate and replace just that individual part. When something goes wrong with an automatic transmission, you usually have to replace the whole thing. (Like I am doing now with every last penny to my name. Only 2 complaints about my fabulous-deal used RV, and one is that it's an automatic).

- Better gas mileage if you know how to work it.

- If your battery dies, can you jump-start an automatic? Maybe, but I've never heard it's possible.

- Manuals are exponentially more fun.

Before learning to drive stick I joked to Mom; "Our next car should be a Chrysler Laser like Fred's ... only in an automatic so I'll know how to drive it."

I thought Mom was going to wash my mouth out with soap. "You do NOT get a fun car in an automatic transmission!"

:D
