My best advice to Autism Speaks if they are trying to raise up a vengeful mob of anti-cure HFAs and Aspies is to carry on the same way as they are right now. By allowing people on their forum to denigate people with autism (Classic, Aspergers or some other type) they will create a vast 30 foot high wall with barbed wire on the top between Autism Speaks and us rather than trying to build a bridge.

I hold the view that the first thing which Autism Speaks should do is to learn to co exist in a better way with the adults who have autism and related conditions.

I say that it is better in life to build bridges rather than barriers.

Age, I read what "Pegasus" wrote on the autistic living forum. She is absolutely ridiculous. I almost can't believe someone would take so much time out of their day to degrade and pick apart another person. (I say almost because unfortunately these people run rampant all over in internet.) I'm going to post on that forum, but I doubt it will change anything in her mind. People like that have a habit of taking all information and changing it to fit their position. Probably the best thing to do it ignore that person. Just don't reply anymore. No one should have to defend themselves in the way she is making you do. Intelligent people know that you cannot diagnose (or undiagnose) someone on the internet. You can't even diagnose someone in real life unless you are a specialist and have spend lots of time with the person. Instead of thinking about what you could have said or done to ellicit such responses from pegasus, think about what may have motivated pegasus, in her own life, to make such dreadful comments. I'm not saying make and excuse for her, but think about her life. She probably has a child labeled "classic" or low-functioning. She probably has absolutely no hope for this child. While some parents find hope in many places, some, like pegasus, will react in a different way. When pegasus encounters an autistic adult with any ability to do anything, any independence at all, she finds it more comfortable to believe this person is not autistic, is not like her child. Basically, she has given up hope on her child and cannot stand any hope thrown at her. This is very sad for autistic children who have parents like this. If your parent doesn't believe in you, who will? Certainly not the child himself. No wonder parents aren't seeing improvement. They don't want to see it, and they are preventing it. Of course, this is just my hypothesis. I can't know who pegasus is through the internet any more than she can know who age is through the internet. My "theory of mind" insights come from my extensive study of sociology, psychology, and cultural anthropology, as well as encountering many members of both the autistic and autism communities in real life and on-line.

Pegasus also has a very skewed sense of Neurodiversity. She seems to think we believe autism is all special happiness and no struggle, and that we oppose to all or most treatment! If that is the message we are putting out, we are doing something wrong. I sincerely hope that pegasus is in the ignorant minority.

What should a person in a leadership role which includes being a parent do ? This is a great and difficult question but one of the tings which needs to be done is to inspire the others (which includes kids).

If you look at modern thought on training and how to manage extream stress in others is to give the people true hope for the future. One of the methods of doing this is to hold up examples of people who have managed to make the thing work and the talk in a positve way about the future, about how the person under stress will be able to pass through the time of stress, get the task done and then be a success.

I know that this works on NTs, I have used it a few times on people I needed to supervise or coach. I do not know how well it will work on non-NTs but I suspect that it will still work.

Perhapes the parent of the child with autism needs to change their outlook if they will have a decent chance of being able to inspire their child. If you want good examples of people with HFA or AS to hold up to inspire younger people with autism, then WP is a good place to start. For instance we have at least one PhD student with autism here, I think that to be a PhD student then you need to be ding well.

But after the way that autism speaks have behaved, I suspect that hell will freeze over before many of the people here will ever help autism speaks by appearing in promotional matter for them. I would like to know how autism speaks views the adult with autism or AS who chooses to live their own life and make something of themselves.

Age1600, I was always curious what it would be like to meet you because you remind(physically) me of a lady that I know who is an aspie. Thus I never doubted that you are on the spectrum. With you it seems perfectly natural. Plus, your positive and funny outlook on life are appreciated.

It probably takes so much effort for her to actually post at all, and then having someone hound her, will just add to the difficulty; it's not this forum, but what that individual did took away her ability to post anywhere.
