I got my license when i was 16, but it took me a while to get comfortable with driving. I am horrible at judging distances so it took me a while to be able to keep the car within the lines on the road(i had a habit of letting the tires drop of the road if another car was coming, to give it space). I had to learn on a vehicle with a manual transmission and that made it that much more difficult. As others have said the key is to practice. Once you practice driving for a while it becomes like second nature.

The best advice that anyone gave me while i was learning to drive was this; Drive slowly, if you get into an accident while driving slowly, it will cost a lot less to fix.

I am fortunate enough to live in a city with a great public transit service, meaning I can go anywhere without having to drive. This is great because I save all kinds of money on gas, insurance, maintenance, etc.

Also, I don't really go anywhere far. I can usually just walk or bus it.

It’s nice to know that I am not the only one that waited to get my license. I took drivers training when I was 16 in school but I would never practice driving. I did not really want to drive because when, just after I got my first permit at 16 one of my best friends in died in a car wreak :( . I never had many friends so after that happened I would get in a panic every time I would get behind the wheel.

Finally at 20 I had to get it because I moved to an area with extremely poor public transportation and the fact that you might have to walk 2 or 4 miles to the nearest bus stop in 115 degree heat. Now I love driving especially on the freeway but the one thing is I can’t listen to any fast music I tend to speed really fast  .

How did you manage to figure things out in only four years of practice? I'm still not much better at judging these sorts of things than when I was 16-- and I'm 23 now! And freeway driving scares me, particularly the merging and changing lanes... it would be a lot easier if I had the vaguest ideas where my car actually ended.

i forget when i got my licence but it was months after i turned 17. ithink i was almost 18.
i don't drive much but i can drive if i have to

i don't drive because no matter how careful i am, i cannot control anyone else on the road. one time i was driving (the speed limit), some guy behind me kept beeping at me and when i turned he screamed stupid b**** at me. i haven't driven much since then. i was told i was driving fine and some people on the road are just like that...

People tell me I "drive like a cop" when they ride with me. I'm not really sure what they mean. :?

I immediately think of the movie "Dragnet" and wonder if they mean Tom Hanks or Dan Akroyd.

Mostly I just drive but I do still have my "Smokey and the Bandit" or "Dukes of Hazzard" moments. (Yes, I once jumped the family station wagon across a 4 lane highway).

i understand and agree fully, that is why i will never drive
think of a brain as a computer your iq is your hard disk space, not the processor,
i have a 286mhz in a 1.2 gigahertz world

I was 21 - took me 4 years and 6 attempts...but finally passed and actually don't mind driving now although I do find that I have to concentrate on where I am going otherwise I will just drive to a random place.

I got my learner's permit yesterday (I'm 25).

Ah. It feels nice to reach one of these "rights of passage" even if it is close to a decade late.

edit:
100th post!

The first milestone that means anything!
(and what an appropriate post to reach it in)

I got my driver's license when I was 20. I was afraid to drive at first. If it was left up to me I would still catch the bus right now.

So I took drivers ed when I was 17. But soon after I got my learner's permit, I got into an accident. I got scared and stopped driving for several years. But my parents made me start driving again. They kept saying, "Look you're and adult now and you can't always depend on us to take you everywhere".

So I've been driving for over 15 years. I've had no major problems. I only had 2 minor fender benders but even then I wasn't at fault.

I drive a Jeep Liberty.

I learned to drive at 15 but didn't get my operator's permit until I was 28. My mother 'sold' me my first car at 30, her old station wagon. A few years later I bought a used Mazda minipick-up. I drove like the proverbial old lady until I took a job delivering pizza with Domino's. Amazing what that 30 minute guarante did for my driving skills.

I got my learner's permit (drive with a licensed driver in the car) at 15, and my license at 16. I have driven a lot ever since. I think I have outstanding depth perception, which compensates for my detail-oriented visual perception, making me a safe driver, even though driving can be stressful for me when there is lots of visual noise.

To cope with the visual noise (many parts of objects, colors, lights), I try to avoid driving in heavy traffic, and completely avoid heavy traffic at night. If I find myself in such traffic, I'll take a less stimulating alternate route. I do better on highways that pass through sparsely populated areas, especially at night because visual noise is limited to what my car's headlights reveal to me. Which is another reason I prefer to be nocturnal.

I was 16, but not when I just turned 16. But I voted the first choice figuring that was the closest. But I do wonder why it skips from "as soon as I turned 16) to age 17 without any choice that includes the rest of the year one is 16.

I got my driver's license as soon as I turned 16. That was back in 1980. It was a nervewracking experience because of the car I took the test in---a 1977 Mustang T-top with a modified 8 cylinder engine that had been used previously for drag racing. So just barely pressing the accelerator causes the car to want to peel out. I got points deducted for hesitating too long at stop signs, but I passed the test. The guy who administered the test told me he knew of this particular car---it had a reputation. In 1980 the car had probably around 30,000 miles on it or less. Today, it has 65,000 miles on it. I keep it tucked away in the garage and get it out a couple times a year. I've kept the car looking as new as possible---I feel like that car has a personality---sort of like that "it has feelings" thing. Around 1997, when my wife and I were buying a car, I had sold the Mustang to a car collector in our area. The title was in the process of being transferred, and he had delivered payment. At school (where I teach) I remember my prep period that morning and getting this feel of anxiety come over me saying, "I made a mistake...I made a mistake...I can't get rid of my car." I called my mother who told my father to talk to the guy about the Mustang. The guy said he understood and allowed me to give him his money back. I felt so relieved. I never plan on getting rid of my Mustang.

No. I know how to drive but driving scares me. So until I get anti-anxiety medication again, I probably will not be getting a driver's license any time soon. (i'm 20)
