Why I think trolls are dumb

They make it really obvious and can't be creative. Be a good troll if you're going to troll, seriously.

No, "for the lulz" was originally a corruption of L-O-L (yes I am referencing that meme) which originally went LOL -> LOLZ -> LULZ.

Lulz simply means 'funnies' or 'fun;'. "You did it for the lulz" = you did it because you thought it was funny. I do not subscribe to people who over-analyze trolling subcultures to Neon Genesis Evangelion levels, because a lot of those psychological/political/mythical/other 'deep' explanations are often copouts to be an as*hole to others OL (this references the url link to 'Malwebolence' I made earlier & ther things.

Phrasing this another way, "I did it for the lulz" is 2000s netspeak for "I did it for the kicks", which is what some other people might understand. Replace with "s**ts and giggles", "laughs" or whatever else you recommend.

Lulz is not just a bastardization of 'lol.' And it's not strictly speaking schadenfreude, either. Most people experience 'existential angst' when they think about how meaningless and purposeless their lives are. This angst is often misidentified as the 'god-shaped hole.' It's the pain and fear we experience when we ponder our mortality, or the mortality of our species, or the idea that 200 years from now nobody will remember you at all. Lulz is the inverse of this. Lulz is the joy, awe, wonder and amusement we experience that is compatible with and often amplified by the recognition that life has no objective meaning or purpose, and so we are radically free to embrace whatever amuses us. Think about this, when watching the best and most-watched viral videos. I don't think the numa-numa dance can make much sense at all outside of this context.*

I never thought of "lulz" in that context (I use it as a bastardization of "lol," because I like it better). The definition, though, really interested me, and I like that we, in a very loose way, have a word for it. "Radically free to embrace whatever amuses us" is a realization I came to years ago, yet lacked a solid definition in my mind. But I guess, at some level, I did know this, because when I changed the focus of this LJ from ficbashes to everyday funny crap that happens, I started off my bio with "life is for the lulz."

Or mayyyybe... I forgot that I had realized this and, at happy coincidence, had internalized the concept of "lulz" and used in it such a way as to match this definition. Heh. At any rate, it's a great reminder.

Also, last night I decided to get a twitter account. It'll focus on the crazy crap that happens at my lab. Feel free to watch, enjoy, whatever.
