re-reading my example i could find a hint though, it breaks the flow of the sentence, cutting mid argument to include your name, and then resuming.
so.
huh i don't know where i'm going with this.
it breaks the sentence. you're focused on what the person is saying and then they stop and say your name. you then have trouble understanding the end of the sentence. I think it is not only related to the feeling of being patronized , it counts too of course because that adrenalin feeling comes when the name is uttered....but would i get just as angry if someone distracted me mid-listening with something else? something totally random, like " pumpkin"?
you know, pumpkin, i think we should discuss your application in my office."
ok that was a strange example. but do you guys see what i'm getting at?

It doesn't interrupt the flow for me, but I sort know what your talking about. If I'm talking to someone and someone completely different says "Logan" (my name) in a conversation with someone else, I pay attention to them and lose focus on my conversation. But if it's in the current conversation, then it doesn't do anything.

My default mental responses to hearing my name are "Oh crap, they know." and "What do they want now?" So, for me, it's at least partially an issue of world view.

I also just don't like the sound of my name. But nicknames aren't any better. What can ya do?

YES! I've always had this, and never understood why!!

I also hate the name I was called by my family as a child. I also used to get in trouble all the time (for "mouthing off", "being rude", "being selfish" etc) so I hated whenever my name was said, because it always preceded punishment.

It makes me have that shot of adrenalin feeling when anyone calls me that name. For this reason, when I started university, I insisted on people calling me by my birth name (Alex/Alexandra - on a side note, what's with all the Asperger's Alexes??).

I also hate calling people by their names and avoid it. Feels too intimate to me!

Mhm, hearing my name or being called puts me in a bad mood.

My reaction is almost the same ... and it doesn't depend on whether a nickname or my real name is used. :(
