Why is stimming considered a "bad" thing?
Why is it everyone on this message board equates their behavioral problems to what everyone else in society thinks abot it and not whether it is actually healthy for themselves personally? Stimming is obsessive compulsive behavior that is exhibited when most of us feel anxiety, NT's dont need to do it and neither should people with Asperger's. If you want to start getting rid of your Autism, you have to change all those little behaviors like stimming, learning little facts about the universe or sports statistics and talking other people's head off about it for an hour straight, rocking back and forth, getting over selective mutism etc... Otherwise don't complain about having Autism if can't muster up any willpower.
i wasnt complaining

Strimming is and obsessive compulsive behavoir for autistics in a similar vain as eating is for everybody. Unlike not eating not stimming will not kill you but holding it in for extensive peroids will damage you mentally. One can find alternative means to release but as good as they may be they are not the purely natural way for autistics.

Who told you that not stimming would damage you mentally? I think you should talk to a psychiatrist or some licensed medical professional before making statements like this. If you are self diagnosed and haven't actually asked a doctor questions like this and then listened to their response, then you should probably rethink how much you know about Autism. I've been seeing credible doctors in the Detroit area for a while now.

Not that it matters but I was diagnosed by a clinition with over 30 years experience. While I have not asked any doctors I have read the opinions of a good number of autism experts. Why do so many think that those that disagree with them are self diagnosed based on poor knowledge of autism?
Until recently stimming was viewed by Autism experts as a maladaptive behavior and hours upon hours were spent trying to "fix the problem" including in some cases electric shock treatments. Nowadays while there is still disagreement more and more autism experts have come to view stimming and other autistic repetitive behaviors similar to what I wrote above. But as you said it is up to the individual not society or their experts to decide.
If you view something you do as wrong it is going to cause you stress. Trying to control a natural behavior is harder but doable for a period of time. Most of us are able control our natural behaviors for periods of time. We also do not view many natural behaviors such as urinating as inherently maladaptive. After a period of time an explosive release is going to happen often in a place and in a way that is highly embarrassing at best. The constant stress of holding back any natural behavior believed to be wrong possibly combined with failures to do so over a period of time can cause mental illnesses such as depression.
Some stimming is self injurious or harmful to others so despite the risks these need to stopped or altered. Most stimming does nothing more then make others uncomfortable. This of course can have negative consequences so controlling it as is advisable, eliminating it is not.
