Yeah, there are several threads on this topic; seems to be a very common issue. I don't have my license yet at 22, either. I can't focus on where I'm going and what I'm doing at the same time. I'm okay if I have a passenger to tell me where to go and when it's safe to merge, read road signs, help watch the road, etc. I don't think I'll ever be able to drive alone.

I have not driven in 10 years (I'm 39), and seriously hate driving.
WAY too much sensory input...

No, I learnt to drive when I was 14 and would occasionally "borrow" the family car. I've never crashed...yet.

People tell me I'm a bit distracted behind the wheel though...

I used to drive quite a bit, pretty much every day - to and from school. I got my license a few months after I turned 16. Since I got married though and moved to a more urban area, I just have not wanted to drive.

it took me about 7 attempts to pass my test - never did like driving, mu judgement of speeds and distances is pretty poor, and my perception is sometimes bad. Haven't drivenm for years now, and mum keeps nagging me to start again...

i will never be able to drive for several reasons... reason number one being i am severely physically disabled...

reason number two is i cannot manage a turning radius i need to be able to turn in a 360 degree circle on the spot hence my powerchair is going to be center wheel drive

reason number three my reaction time sucks ass

reason number for road rules confuse me

reason five i get distracted too easily

the list could go on and on and on with me... ill think of more and come back ha ha!

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

I can drive somewhat decently during the day on rural roads that have no snow or ice on them, but driving anywhere else would probably lead to me killing myself and/or other drivers. 8O

I am a diagnosed aspie, and I am a very good driver. I have only had one ticket, and that was more than 30 years ago. For me, driving is very relaxing.

Got my license back in 1999 (16 years old) - been driving ever since. Congested city traffic or no traffic doesn't do any difference to me. I adapt my driving skills to whatever situation I'm in.

Driving is a means of relaxation for me - and I've been a fairly safe driver - often compared to my dad, who typically drives slower than the posted limit just to be safe :)

I'm 20 and I have my permit(long story) I have procrastinated through senior year and after graduation my dad said I had to go out and get my license. so my summer of graduation to freshman year I was in drivers ed..........I have one drive left and then I can take the test for getting my license, which I hope to do this summer. I actually need the license, mainly because I am applying for RA next year at college and that means a lot of things, mainly coming home late for breaks and leaving early from home for back to school. I also work late hours during the summer, I work for a military subsidary, a moving and storage facility, so sometimes our jobs take a while, and I have enough status there to get hired by a transport for a day job, so the car is a necessity. My parents are paying for my insurance. I can drive quite well actually. As long as it's not too early in the morning, say.......before 8 I can do well, I have logged over 200+ miles in driving, and once I get my licence I can drive company trucks, thinking about getting my CDL as well (Commerical Drivers Licence) but don't think i have the will power to drive semi trailers.

I am currently learning to drive. Apparently I am very good even though I stalled at two roundabouts and drove up onto a curb on a main road :|.

I feel most alive when I am in my car - and it is a six speed manual with very firm suspension and the most incredibly direct steering. I love being able to feel the car through my feet, legs, butt, back and arms. It seems to spread the stress load or something and is incredibly soothing. Going out for a drive usually manages to avert a meltdown - that's how good this car is for me...

Saying that, if I have to drive a normal family sedan or similar, I don't get the same buzz and I get a lot more tired.

Also, apparently my driving became much less stressful for others once I started taking ritalin. It did stop me getting distracted by and fixated on the speedometer lights.....

Does anyone have issues with 4 way stops? It irks me to no end how people cannot get the concept of stopping and waiting their turn. Also, people will be "nice" and try to let me go ahead of them at the intersection. I just don't get it, it seems a waste of time and totally against how I'm supposed to drive. However, I seem to be the opposite of others in this thread, where I had absolutely no trouble remembering everything taught to me in drivers ed, as I still seem to correct older drivers, even though they don't believe me, lol! I've always liked to road, as it's one of the few places where absolutes and rules are the norm, you're either right or wrong!

I've been driving for 30 years now and do fine, although my passengers may differ. I like sports cars and drive too fast.
