The wonders of words being borrowed from different languages. It may be pronounced "Kah-rah-oh-ke" in Japanese, however the accepted pronunciation in English is still "Carry-oh-key"

There's also the pronunciation of "kamikaze" (which is pronounced "kah-mee-kah-zeh" in Japan, means "godly wind") which was turned into "ka-mih-ka-zee" in America.

Oh, and let's not forget "Hyundai" which is supposed to be pronounced "hyoon-die," but due to the old "rhymes with Sunday" ads, the pronunciation in America is "hun-day." :?

That is indeed the wonder of loanwords. :P

Them Moose goosers

How about them Moose goosers, Ain't they cluse?
Up in them boondocks, goosin' them moose
Goosin' them huge moose, goosin' them tiny,
Goosin them medlin' moose in they hinny!
Look at them Moose goosers, Ain't they dumb?
Some use an umbrella, some use they thumb.
Them obtuse Moose goosers, sneakin' through the woods,
pokin' they snoozey moose in they goods,
How to be a Moose gooser? It'll turn you puce;
Get your gooser loose, and rouse a drowsy moose!

I don't think that mispronounciation which occurs from loanwords and transliteration is necessarily a bad thing. If you speak American English than than words are going to become more Americanized. For example when I first (a very long time ago) say Hyundai, I wasn't sure how it was supposed to be said. The "correct" way here in America may be a lot different than the way it is said in Korea.

One thing that does fascinate me a lot is the differences between British English and American English.

Oh, well it is what it is :)
(did I really just say that!)

"it is what it is" is just another way of saying "it's happened already, deal with it."

Funny, I am actually not quite sure what it means. That is why it bothers me so much. I have noticed people use it when they feel they need to say something just to avoid silence, but they don't really want to say anything.

Seriously, does someone know what "it is what it is" supposed to mean?

getting over something as in "he's gotten over the illness and is feeling better now." confused me. I always pictured someone climbing over a fence, and didn't understand what that could have to do with being sick or sad.

"God doesn't give you more than you can handle"

If this statement were true then no one would commit suicide.

Yeah, that one is truly awful. The really twisted thing is people will sometimes it to comfort people.

So, there is a God out there that feels your life is just not hard enough right now--here's some more crap to deal with. Yeah, I really find this phrase offensive and disturbing.
