Funny how you find these old threads when you are looking for something else...

I'm not all that clumsy, though I have my moments. I sometimes misstep when I walk, scuffing my soles on the pavement because my foot wasn't quite where I thought it was. I stub my toes on everything (though I think this is pretty common).

I learned to tie my shoes later than most (I was probably about 12), and I always had trouble throwing and catching balls. I can throw them okay, actually... I've just been told that I "throw like a girl"... :)

I have really good fine motor skills. It was probably my music training, but my fingers are extremely coordinated. I have good hand independence, crucial for playing the piano.

Weird about the drooling thing. I occasionally do that. I always thought it was normal to drool when you're busy concentrating on something else! :)

I have poor motor skills, I guess they're okay. I mean I can catch something alright, I can't throw very well. Never been good at sports, nor had much of an interest. I walk odd sometimes, and am always clumsy. I have a friend with AS and he's a little worse with motor skills. He grasps objects like a toddler would hold a crayon, if that makes any sense.

My motor skills are good. I compete in Triathlons, I'm a pilot, I can rip up a rifle target at 200 yards, and once upon a time when I was a young 20-something lad interested in video games I was consistently in the top 50 players (out of several million) in Quake deathmatch.

When I was a kid I had some motor function issues. I'd constantly trip all over myself, lose balance, fall, etc... Adults of course yelled at me as if it were my fault. The issues went away in my teen years.

Yeah, I was much worse as a kid, too. It's strange, because I was always told that I tripped over everything so much because my parents didn't know I needed glasses. While that was true, I wonder how much of the story was left unexplained...

My fine motor skills were pretty bad as a kid. I was about ten before I finally got the hang of tying bows and my handwriting was pretty illegible until I was in the eighth grade. In high school, my sister-in-law told me I walked like a giraffe. Now, my fine motor skills are better -- I have very nice handwriting -- but I'm still hopeless at sports or dancing.

edit: Oh, and even thought I do things now that require good fine motor skills, like knitting, I do them differently from others. For instance, I can't wrap my hand into the arthritic curled position required for English-style knitting so I hold the yarn in a vaguely Continental style in my left hand and knit in twist stitch, drawing the yarn onto the right needle from the back of the left-hand loop. I just can't manage the regular knit stitch, no matter how hard I try.

Regards,

Patricia

I am also darn hopless at batting. That bat often does not swing anywhere near where I want to swing and I am often out on the first ball. BTW my handwriting is also pretty bad.
Could this be a condition known as "motor apraxia"? and is it typical of what many aspies go through?

I certainly can relate at least - when I was 5 I was actually diagnosed with a whole host of motor skills related problems including poor muscle tone all over my body, lack of spatial awareness, and poor motor coordination. I have the same problem with throwing things and most sporting activities (except long distance running), at athletics in Primary School I got the worst score in my grade - even the physically disabled kid did better than me. The teachers thought I wasn't trying, when I was actually trying my hardest (I only managed to throw the shotput one metre).

I also spent my entire childhood breaking things by accident because of knocking things over, tripping, or walking into shelves. These days I go about with perpetually bruised legs because of constantly banging them on things.

I have terrible motor skills. I can't write. I can't catch something. I'm working on improving my skills by playing piano. :)

My motor skills arent the best but they are not bad.
I can drive a vehicle, and a dirtbike
I can play volleyball and have played on the school team..I wasnt the best player, but I wasnt the worst either
I can bounce, dribble, and shoot a basketball
I can play floorhockey and play the ball across the gym and keep from opposing players.
Im not too bad when it comes to catching and throwing a football

I am however horrible at badmington and baseball and am pretty clumsy at times.

My motor skills are pretty damn dismal. I can't play ball sports to save my life, I bump into things/people alot, my hand writing sucks , I can't sew that good. I am bad a ice skating or anything with wheels and I didn't learn to write a bike until 13 and I still can only ride one on a flat surface. Oh and I'm not that good at dance routines/aerobics, although I do enjoy them.

The only good motor skills I have are in drawing, other fine motor skill type things like writing or sewing I'm not good at but drawing I'm really good, I can draw tiny little leaves on a tree or a person's eye lashes neatly. but then write my name on it and it just ruins the picture.

I have enough hand-eye co-ordination to fly a plane, but not enough to play well at football, baseball or basketball. Before my knee went bad and my back went lame I was a pretty good bowler (ten pins and duck pins).

I've seen people with AS say they're good bowlers, but I am like you. I look stupid at it and I suck at it. People laugh and I win awards for being the "best sport" (yes, this happened to me 3-4 years ago after a round of bowling with my co-workers). Best sport meant I got the lowest score but took it well. What they don't know is I was cursing everyone on the inside while laughing about it on the outside. I even had this odd delusion that I would become better at it over time and become a professional bowler. Really? Wow, I was an idiot to think this.

The "clumsy" aspect of AS I'm sure is not uniform.

I was never athletically gifted, but I wasn't a klutz either.

I do notice that I tend to stumble and bumble from time to time. I know to this date that I'm not very coordinated when it comes to athletics, so I think nothing has changed.

Still, I am proficient with firearms, I ride sportbikes, etc. but most of those things are more about CONTROL than COORDINATION. A person could juggle balls but not be able to hit the broad side of a barn with a shotgun.

I'm a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to motor skills. I can be quite clumsy, having fallen down stairs or tripped over my own feet multiple times. I've even tripped when my toe caught on flat ground! And I've never been good at sports, generally speaking. I was always the last one picked. When I played softball as a kid (forced intramurals) the opposing team's outfield moved infield when I batted because they knew I'd strike out, which I did.

However, I have a very good track record with shooting. I once put 4 rounds into the same hole in rapid fire handgun shooting. I was also good at archery. I never split an arrow, but I've broken several nocks and punched holes in fletching. My favorite thing to do was take a 3"x5" blank index card and stick it on the back stop with a pencil through the center and see if I could hit the pencil. I could usually do it about 3 out of 5 times. The range was about 20 yards.

I also used to study martial arts and was generally pretty good at it. Once I took an on-campus wushu class and the instructor kept trying to get me to join his martial arts school, even suggesting I do some chores to offset the cost because I couldn't afford it. At the time I was too busy with school, but now I wish I had taken him up on his offer.

It's funny that sbcmetroguy mentioned bowling. A few years ago I was invited to go bowling with some people from work. I went and actually did very well (I had a few strikes and several spares). Nobody would believe me when I said it was the first time I'd been bowling.
