I only know one other person with AS. We talk now and then. He's diagnosed, and he knows that I suspect AS. He's pretty smart, we can relate on a fair number of fronts. I mostly observe him though.

I tried to befriend a woman at college who was in a wheelchair. Don't know what was wrong with her but she was a stuck up b***h. Kinda surprised me.

As far as mental disabilities, I don't know of anyone anywhere near where I live that has them, and there's no real social place to hang out with them even if there were.

As far as physical disabilities, I have had a few, mostly family friends that I've known for years.

i never managed to keep a friend for a long time, not in my lifetime and i'm 46 years old. but i'd like to. i mean, i find people with retardation so sweet and easier to talk to, and fun, and not judgmental. and i like bi polar people. i find them highly intellegent and creative and interesting and emotional. and at work there was a guy and a girl with a dreamy look in their eyes, schizophrenic, i think, and that look just drew me to them.
but i cant make friends even with them! although i'd like to, and with normal people i dont want to. that's the difference. i wish i could. and people with down syndrome are the sweetest, too bad i dont know anyone.
i met another aspie and we hit it off, kind off, but then he fell in love with me and got obssessed and started getting on my nerves.

I've known moderately to severely autistic people in real life, none of them really ended up as my friends for many of the same reasons neurotypical people didn't either. Autistic people are far more common in online communities, but at the moment I look at the prospect of having online friendships as a very empty hope.

I find 'normal' people a crashing bore. I prefer other disabled people to associate and befriend to the extent its possible for me because they seem more intelligent, creative and colorful than normal people do.

People with mental health disabilities seem to think outside the box more than regular folks, at least the ones I know.
