The chorus of this song now tends to remind me of various pseudo-conspiracy theories of the origin of autism.. "it's in the water.."

REM has always struck me with this, maybe because Michael Stipe always sings with an outside observer frame of reference.

Too Little Too late - Barenaked Ladies
This song has to be about an NT/AS relationship, right?

You say, "Why does everything revolve around you?"
You say, "Why does everything I do confound you?"
You say that I pulled the world from under you,
You can't go through it this time

And I could be good, and I would - If I knew I was understood
And it'll be great, just wait - Or is it too little too late?

One day, this embarrassment will fade behind me
And that day I could think of things that won't remind me
But these days it's unbearable for both of us
We can't discuss it this way

I'm gaining strength, tying to learn pull my own weight
But I'm gaining pounds at the precipice of Too Late
Just Wait

I could be good, and I would - If I knew I was understood
And it'll be great, just wait - Or is it too little too late?

Record and play, after years of endless rewind
Yesterday wasn't half as tough as this time
This time isn't Hell,
Last time, I couldn't tell
This mind wasn't well
Next time, hope I'm...
Going to be good, and I would -
If I knew I was understood
And it'll be great, just wait -
Or is it too little too late?
Good, and I would -
If I knew I was understood
And it'll be great, just wait -
Or is it too little too late?

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can't you understand
Oh my little girl

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Anything off of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" soundtrack, but particularly "Comfortably Numb".

Yael Naim -New Soul-Lyrics:

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take
But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

La, la, la, la (21x)
La, la, la, la (21x)

See I'm a young soul in this very strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout what is true and fake
But why all this hate? try to communicate
Finding trust and love is not always easy to make

La, la, la, la (21x)
La, la, la, la (21x)

This is a happy end
Cause you don't understand
Everything you have done
Why's everything so wrong

This is a happy end
Come and give me your hand
I'll take you far away

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take
But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

New soul... (la, la, la, la,...)
In this very strange world...
Every possible mistake
Possible mistake
Every possible mistake
Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes...

I relate to this song because of my obsessive imaginary world that I was in 24/7 as a kid. So not for everyone with AS but some will get it.

I linger in the doorway
Of alarm clock screaming monsters
Calling my name
Let me stay
Where the wind will whisper to me
Where the raindrops as
They're falling tell a story

In my field of paper flowers
And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me

I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me
Don't say I'm out of touch
With this rampant chaos, your reality
I know well what lies beyond my sleeping refuge
The nightmare I built my own world to escape

In pitch dark I go walking in your landscape
Broken branches trip me as I speak

Just cause you feel it
Doesn't mean its there
Just cause you feel it
Doesn't mean its there

Theres always a siren
Singing you to shipwreck
Steer away from these rocks
We'd be a walking disaster

There There

Why so green and lonely?
Heaven sent you to me
to me

"Shout"--Tears For Fears (It's my rage song!)
"Across the Universe"--The Beatles
"Behind Blue Eyes"--The Who
"Take On Me"--A Ha (both the lyrics and the tune get me)
"Cosmic Castaway"--Electrasy (I took my login after this song on WP, so yeah, the lyrics strongly remind me of my own AS experience)

It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright,
And anyway, my eyes are not accustomed to this light,
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete,
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete...

As for other resonant songs -

Pink Floyd - Keep Talking:

There's a silence surrounding me,
I can't seem to think straight,
I sit in a corner
And no one can bother me...

I can't live your way,
Go ahead without me,
I'll find my own way...

Reflections from Disney's 'Mulan' was always a song I could relate to especially after hearing the full version. I always thought it sounded like an aspie girl who like so many of us, has to wear a mask and play a part in order to make those around her happy, but every time she looks in a mirror she sees the mask staring back at her rather than the real her that she has to keep hidden from the rest of the world. this makes her miserable but she dreams of the day when the world will except her and she no longer has to wear her mask and the reflection she sees would be the real her.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzsHrK7nY2c

Look at me
You may think you see who I really am
But you'll never know me
Ev'ry day
It's as if I play a part
Now I see
If I wear a mask
I can fool the world
But I cannot fool my heart

Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?

I am now
In a world where I have to hide my heart
And what I believe in
But somehow
I will show the world
What's inside my heart
And be loved for who I am

Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection someone I don't know?
Must I pretend that I'm
Someone else for all time?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?

There's a heart that must be free to fly
That burns with a need to know the reason why
Why must we all conceal
What we think
How we feel
Must there be a secret me
I'm forced to hide?

Brighteyes - Lua

"When everything is lonely I can be my own best friend
I get a coffee and the paper; have my own conversations
With the sidewalk and the pigeons and my window reflection
The mask I polish in the evening, by the morning looks like s***

And I'm not sure what the trouble was that started all of this
The reasons all have run away but the feeling never did
It's not something I would recommend, but it is one way to live
Cause what is simple in the moonlight, by the morning never is"

"The Stranger" by Billy Joel. It relates to keeping the real me hidden and staying as the new me.

Well we all have a face
That we hide away forever
And we take them out and
Show ourselves
When everyone has gone
Some are satin some are steel
Some are silk and some are leather
They're the faces of the stranger
But we love to try them on

Well we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover see
The stranger in yourself?

Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south
Every now and then
You've done it, why can't
Someone else?
You should know by now
You've been there yourself

That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover see
The stranger in yourself?

Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south
Every now and then
You've done it why can't
Someone else?
You should know by now
You've been there yourself

You may never understand
How the stranger is inspired
But he isn't always evil
And he is not always wrong
Though you drown in good intentions
You will never quench the fire
You'll give in to your desire
When the stranger comes along.

Another I was reminded of this evening...

Rush - Subdivisions:

Growing up, it all seems so one-sided,
Opinions all provided,
The future pre-decided,
Detached and subdivided in the mass production zone,
Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone...

Minority - Green day
Mad World - Gary Jules
All the right friends - REM
I'm not ok (I promise), and Teenagers - My Chemical Romance

For me Minority by Green Day has to be the AS anthem.
