"Downward comparisons" are psychologically healthy. As long as it is an internal process (thinking it to yourself as opposed to telling it to the "downwardly compared"), and it is done with a attitude of gratitude ("I am grateful" as opposed to "I am better than"), I don't think it is offensive. Remember, you can't offend people with your thoughts, only with your words or actions.
