I don't believe in god and I guess there are two good reasons why not. 1) There is absolutely no evidence for the strong claim that there exists the sort of world-explaining god that both poly- and monotheism posit. 2) The notion of a god itself stands in need of an explanation and therefore cannot completely explain the world. God is the ultimate deus ex machina, in other words, and cannot do the job of completely explaining the world and thus cannot possibly fill its supposed role. "God" as that which ultimately conditions the world is an incoherent notion. This point presupposes the failure of the ontological argument, but I'm not too concerned about that.

I'm interested to know if there's any of you out there who believe in the concept of "A Creator".

I am often times confused by the notion of ?God?. As an example, when I think about the teachings of my particular religion, the notion of ?God? goes far and beyond simply being ?A Creator?.

Furthermore, it seems like there?s a complex fabric of beliefs that go along with believing in a ?God?. Interestingly, it seems that this complex fabric of beliefs is highly personal (like people get to choose what aspects they believe in).

As a young aspie, I found this ?gray area? highly confusing. So, initially, I chose the rational path. To be an atheist. Later (in middle school), I realized that I should not be so rash. Since that time, I simply considered myself agnostic.

As a god botherer I actually believe agnosticism is most rational, with both and theism being faith positions, though I feel to only believe in what we can see and not we can feel is in fact a form of irrationality (as atheism but not agnosticism is) as feeling stuff is a large part of what makes us human. I wish more atheists where moderate atheists or agnostic, and a few of the more extreme religionists where agnostic. There would be less mockery and hatred between peoples if the extreme atheists grew into agnosticism and the more religious grew less religious such as ISIS etc.

There is confusion in this thread and in the larger human community about atheism.

True Atheism is benign and indifferent toward the god-believers. 8)

True Atheists rarely think about the topic of god belief because they don't believe in imaginary beings and they don't focus on what they don't believe in. They spend their time and energy on important things. 8)

There is, however, a 'type' of Atheist that is not a true Atheist and they should actually be called an ANTI-theist.

ANTI-theists despise god-believers(and all religion) and spend(read waste) a great deal of time and energy expressing how they feel about these issues. They are AGAINST gods and god-believers and consider their views to be vastly superior and they revel in pointing it out. Some of them even devote their lives to mocking and debating with Xtians and so on.

They are AGAINST something that, in their own opinion, does not even exist :!: :?: :!: :?: :!: :!: :?: :!: :!:
This is very odd don't ya think?

True atheist simply don't care if someone believes in sky gods or whatever and they enjoy their lives rarely thinking about such trivialities.

Btw, all Xtians(for example) are Atheist toward Ra, Odin, Krishna, Kali, Saraswati, etc..... and they ignore these gods as fantasy just as a true Atheist ignores the Xtian god as irrelevant.

There's a few of us here who believe in 'The One Thing' of Emerald Tablet/Tabula Smaragdina fame. Panentheism makes the most sense to me just because thought becoming matter - whether it's me building a dog house or God purportedly speaking a universe into existence - can't be considered a thing fully separate from its originator. It would be like claiming that electricity is created ex nihilo from steam turbines.

I wish nonbelievers could just be content with saying they do not believe in a God instead of going out of their way to make the point that they are Atheist. I think the Atheists who make a point identifying them self as such have ulterior motives. I think this breed of Atheist view Atheism as an indicator of intelligence. This is the breed of Atheist that is consumed with engaging in lofty, "highbrow" discourse extrapolating on why they are Atheists and how and why Atheism is correct and belief in a God is inferior. Beard stroking pontificators.

I see Secularism as selflessness. It is an assumption of believers that people who do not worship a God, must worship themselves. Why do human beings need to worship anything? That argument is just another way for believers to retaliate for "sin" of nonconformity. Try to make those who do not believe feel guilt and to make them seem dangerous to other believers, because of course, anyone who dares not believe in some God, is a threat to humanity.<sic>

i am impressed by the respectful nature of this discussion on both sides of the God fence.. and it bears out the truth of a study done here in this actual forum by Boston University.. that the actual percentage of atheists here in this forum of study.. is at around 26% as compared to 17% in a so-called equivalent demographic of so-called NT online participants...

http://csjarchive.cogsci.rpi.edu/procee ... er0782.pdf

But what this thread does prove out as well as the study.. is that people on the so-called higher functioning end of the function do overall at 74 percent have a belief in some kind of potential for a GOD at least..much of that belief comparatively speaking per Christian Percentages in the US general demographic and online demographic.. is alternate beliefs in GOD beyond mainstream traditional Abrahamic religious beliefs...

And from the scholarly study i have done on the subject of the man Jesus.. per historical man and not mythical version.. is he wasn't too far off in pantheist views that i see GOD as all that is.. or mother nature true.. and not a construct of human culture that is abstract enough where people can be convinced.. yes even the recipients of it.. that even female genital mutation in some countries is a real cause for FEELING social status...

http://www.sacred-texts.com/chr/thomas.htm

And i do think that the GOD of nature.. is more a mystical total equation.. than what science can even imagine at this point.. per just my very small view of life in proof of what a greater power has evidenced in my life.. only in my opinion..of course...

If only there could be a valid study of people who believe in the Abrahamic tradition of god because of personal experience as compared with the percentage of those who believe in the Abrahamic tradition because of social conditioning. What percentage of believers would there be had not they been EXPECTED to believe this tradition by family and society, since as early in life as they can remember? Never given an opportunity to make a clear, uninfluenced decision.

MarcusSolaris, your post (and responses to it) have been removed for the third time. Consider this as an official warning, that each post containing ridicule, mockery or an attempt to belittle or provoke other members based on their religious belief will be removed. Post one more time in this tone, and you'll be a candidate for banishment.

If you want to discuss the subject of god and religion in a more free spirited tone, consider doing that in PPR (Politics, Philosophy and Religion forum), where the rules are a bit more lose, and debates more harsh.

http://www.wrongplanet.net/forum20.html

Quoting the site admin here:

Here the emphasis is on members sharing information, mutual support, general chit-chat and socialising. These forums are more heavily moderated than PPR and the rules applied more strictly. Moderators are the door-keepers to keep the party running smooth and any trouble makers kept in check. The same thread that can happily exist in PPR would not be allowed to exist in the Random forum for example. Hot topics of debate belong in PPR.
