I guess it has to go an extra level to get through in the North, I?m broadly generalising and somewhat joking but many guys drive their cars like they stole them. In the countryside there are many narrow winding roads, sometimes I?ve met cars on the wrong side of the road on a bend, hair raising stuff.

in America there is broad surveillance and since a major part of local revenues comes from traffic fines, one increasingly can't get away with fast driving here. America is the land of the ticket trap.

Ah of course, in the Republic its slowing moving toward privatization with mobile speed cameras.

I love driving fast but I also love taking my sweet time when I want to. So it just depends on my energy level or my mood or if I am late getting to where I need to go.

I am always acutely aware that there often are people behind me who need to get where they're going in a hurry and that I cannot criticize them for this because I am often in that very same boat myself. I have been known to smilingly let faster traffic by me.

I am like that too. But not too slow. Passengering with mom can be rough. She is at that age now where 40 mph is lightening fast. When we are together I prefer to drive.

there is an optimum medium between getting there quickly and stopping to smell the roses.

I love to drive. I just learned manual over the summer and I am pretty good at it. I like the fact that I can get into the car and it will take me (almost) anywhere I want to go. I did not get my license til I was 21 so I appreciate having a car more than most kids my age.

how well do you deal with roads clogged with sunday drivers?

Honestly, I am usually home on Sundays. That is my "busy" day- cleaning house, working on homework for the week- so I generally don't even leave the house that day. If you are talking about slow people in general, if they are going less than the posted speed limit, then I go around them. The one thing I hate about manual is that it takes so damn long to speed up. Especially when I am already going 60 (mph) and am in 5th gear. I have to make sure there is no one coming for like three miles in order to get enough speed to pass someone.

Overtaking is much easier if you are in 3rd or 4th.

Whenever I speed up on motorways and dualers I leave it in 3rd or 4th till I'm at 60 or 70 then stick it straight in 5th or 6th, much easier that way.

I love driving fast but I never speed because that is stupid and dangerous. I might sit at 72-73 on a motorway and 71 on a dualer but that's as much as I will go over the limit.

Smelling the roses is great. But smelling them from seed to bud to bloom to withering all in the same smell is a bit much. Sometimes I would like to actually get to my destination before the year turns. :D

I hear ya. :) the dawdlers and passive-aggressives remind me of the tantruming toddler lying down and screaming in the middle of the supermarket aisle blocking shoppers from going past.

When traffic and road conditions allow for it, my gas foot gets a little heavy. Especially if the roads are twisty. I love the feeling of the acceleration. Because my car isn't a 70's muscle car, I find the twisty roads give more of that acceleration feeling as compared to starting from a stop. It's just not a straight ahead acceleration sensation.

driving a noisy rough car keeps me from speeding if only to minimize the noise and roughness/harshness. but the speed genie is irresistible in something totally magic-carpet smooth like a Mercedes 560SEL that just floats serenely over everything. like flying on the ground. wish I could experience that more often.

I LOVE driving fast. Used to dream of becoming a race car driver.

I drive like a bat out of hell on the interstate. I love to drive with the sunroof open, blasting loud music. I won't put up with people driving too slow in the left lane. If someone pulls over in front of me and I have to slow down because of it, I will tailgate them aggressively until they move over.

I have been known to "part the sea of traffic" on the interstate with my aggressive ways. I just think there is no excuse for people who clog up the left lanes when they have plenty of room to move over. I like to drive 80-90 mph which I think is really not that fast for the interstate.

Otherwise, most of the time I drive a lot more cautiously. 5-10 over the limit like most people. On a 4 lane bypass highway with a speed limit of 65 mph, I probably drive around 70-75 or a bit more if I need to pass.

On a regular 2 lane highway, I like to drive around 60 because that's where I get the best gas mileage. Sometimes people tailgate me, but I notice after they pass me, that I still end up right behind them at the next red light or stop sign. It's not worth being in a hurry if it doesn't actually get you that far ahead of traffic.

In congested areas, I usually drive at the speed limit and try to be courteous to other drivers.

I like really twisty, curvy roads. I get excited and tend to drive faster than I normally would.

I love to drive fast late at night when there is no traffic on the roads, BUT where I live there's too much risk of hitting a deer that way.

it would be a lot safer for everybody if only America would take a clue from how the autobahns are run, with strict speed segregation in the lanes, IOW the fast lane is not plugged by passive aggressives like it is here more often than not- and the slower lanes remain slower.

That sounds far too complicated for most americans to grasp. :(

unfortunately that paints a pretty uncomplimentary picture of us 'muuricaans.

I'm amazed that so many drivers don't seem to understand the basic rule of slower traffic keeping to the right. Even when there are signs posted.

I think some people do it on purpose though, to antagonize people, especially truck drivers. They will suddenly decide to pull over in the left lane, knowing they are going to block your way, and take their sweet time passing. Truck drivers damn well know better than to drive like that, and they can get pulled over for it too, so the only explanation that makes sense to me is that they do it for meanness.
