I didn't officially learn to tie shoelaces until I was maybe 9 years old, and it was a real problem. I used to think I would never learn and would have to wear Velcro or buckled shoes the rest of my life. My parents eventually realized that the problem was that whenever they showed me how to tie laces they would be standing in front of me, and everything would be shown in reverse in my perspective, which utterly confused me. It wasn't until I was shown how to tie them from my own perspective that I learned to do it. Although I don't remember exactly how or when I did.

I used to also be confused by the differences between right and left because I didn't know that "my" left and right looked the opposite to someone else's left and right. They'd raise their right hand and I'd think it was their left. It never occurred to me then that I could just have the other person turn around and then raise my right hand. It was actually when I was around 13 and got a new Cabbage Patch doll that that had silky hair you could brush and style, and she had a wire built into one of her hands so she could hold her brush that I figured it out, because the directions said to turn the doll around to find out if they were left or right-handed. I also learned how to properly braid hair thanks to that doll. My MLP figures were very thankful.

I was 3 or 4 when I learned to tie my shoes. I remember one time I had to tie my shoes for the school psychologist. (My parents were trying to get the school to let me in at an earlier-than-normal age.)

Not until I was a teenager, and even now I have trouble with tying shoes. I like shoes without laces.

I taught myself - I think I was about 3 or 4. I was shown how to tie my dressing gown and I transferred the same principle to my shoes. One of the best things was shown how to do double knots and they very rarely come undone. I can never decide how to put the laces in the shoes though - x pattern or loops!

I cannot recall the exact age but I believe around 5 or 6 yrs old.

My son (AS) is ten and he still cannot do them properly. He could briefly earlier in the year but he seems to have 'forgotten' and now he relies on others to do them or just wears Velcro. My husband (suspected AS) has told me that he couldn't tie his laces until he was in his late teens.
