I have learned that other autistics view their autism differently and that there are legitimate reasons for this.

I now understand that my and others difficulties are not solely the result of discrimination and the NT world misunderstanding us. While I think discrimination and misunderstanding of the NT world are very important factors, Autism and other lack of skills also are at fault.

Sometimes reading people's threads I feel like I'm not on the spectrum at all. Sometimes I feel as autistic as hell. Most of all, I realize how different we are even when we are similar. This is super important because the only autistic person I interact with on a regular basis irl is my son. Sometimes I assume I know exactly what he's going through, but we couldn't be more different. I've learned to be a better advocate for him-and myself-in any case.

When you've seen one autistic person, you've seen ... exactly one autistic person!

I don't know that I have changed so much as I have learned and discovered a lot about myself that I wasn't really aware of before.

Never watched the movie, but I don't think there's any gain either way if you don't include life experience in the mix. :chin:

It would have been better if I hadn't been drafted in the first place. 8O

I actually first joined this forum back when I was 17 and the depression was kicking in. I actually stopped posting for ten years when I tried to ask for help but nothing worked.

I have become far more aware of myself. Wow! It has been quite a journey. A mental adventure if you ask me. It is like it has been a tsunami of unleashing discovery and I am on the whoosh bit that comes inland slowly as I have been the vibrant crest bit.... And maybe where the slowly moving bit stops will be the date of the assessment... By which time I very much doubt that anyone will be able to tell me anything about myself which I didn't already know. But how to survive until then? How to keep my head above the water as I flow slowly to that time?

I stopped being obsessed with my putative AS, with the question "do I really have it or not?" to this extent it was when I was in my twenties. I also stopped being obsessed with my growing older (yes, even when I was as young as 18 or 20, I was terrified I was growing old  ).
