I can't stand the taste and I have never gotten drunk because it's too strong for me.

Instead of alcohol I'll eat ice cream or candy while I'm cooking dinner. This week I'm also making cookies when I bake meals.

I am on the spectrum and I drink. I think that as a central nervous system depressant, alcohol helps me when I'm on the verge of a meltdown. A shot of vodka or whiskey and 10 minutes later I can feel the tension leaving my body. It also helps in social situations with anxiety. Unfortunately, the tipping point between relaxed and drunk is very quick for me so I've ended up drunk without really want to be.

Now that I'm getting older (50), I'm finding that alscohol and I don't get along as well as we used to. I've heard this is a common thing with aging. I drink less and am seeking out other coping methods. I recently found that lying UNDER my large beanbag chair when I'm overstimulated works even better than my weighted blanket! Yay!

PS this is my first comment on this site.

I am hypersensitive to how alcohol tastes. Plus, my older brother and the rednecks in my area ruined my perception of it. The bars were also sickeningly smoky, very loud, burning hot, and the jerks in them didn’t set me up with any women nor did the women at the bars looked my way.

I do hate the social isolation not drinking has caused me to go through. My grandparents told me drinking was “bad” but my older brother got all the social action while I was stuck at home.

I'm Aspie/bipolar and I drink quite often, although I'm not an alcoholic. I think a lot of autistic people are really into rules and laws and might see alcohol as being against the rules.

For me, there are two main reasons why I don't drink. The first is religious. I'm a Latter-Day Saint (Mormon), and drinking booze is against the Word of Wisdom. Think of it like the Jewish dietary laws, but replace the pork and shellfish with booze, tea, coffee, and tobacco. The second is because I have an addictive personality which is no doubt worsened by autism. I'm already addicted to sugar/soda and the internet, and I'm also becoming hooked on online shopping. There are two instances in which I was unwittingly exposed to alcohol, and I didn't like it. I never want to willingly drink a palatable alcoholic drink even if I were to denounce my religion. I KNOW I'd become an alcoholic.
