Yes, golf is a great hobby. Not only do I get better every month, but the short drive to the golf course is sufficiently challenging that it has improved my driving skills! Then I get to practice my face to face social skills so they are even better than when I was in an office dealing with customers on the phone all day.

Collecting hobbies are where the costs can go high, though some hobbies are by nature expensive such as physical space travel and the like.

My special interests are creatures and making art.

I enjoy creatures by learning about animals online/in books, looking at monster art, observing bugs and birds outside, etc. so that doesn't cost me anything.

Making art can be dirt cheap or extremely expensive, depending on the medium and materials needed. In my case, it only costs a moderate amount. I use expensive materials sparingly, and my larger projects are typically made with things like second-hand fabric and pieces of plywood.

I think another factor that balances things out is that I don't have a lot of interests outside of those two things that would normally cost people money. I don't travel, I rarely drink, I don't go out to restaurants or to social events. Outside of living expenses like groceries and bills, I only really spend money on art related things.

Oh for sure. The amount of anime and furry s**t I have is really high. And stuffed animals.

I spend money on cute clothes I don't need. Fortunately I have a 24 inch waist which means I can fit into small sizes of women's clothes that go on sale all the time! I just bought a couple nice crop tops and skirts as it is now too cold to wear them outside! Plus skimpy clothes don't take up much room!

For me it is car parts. In my forties figured out how to do most of the maintenance on my car. I enjoy the troubleshooting, wrenching, replacing fluids, filters, broken or worn parts. It is rewarding to learn how different areas of the car works I feel in the zone. I got hold of the 5,000 page manufacturers factory service manual and diagrams for my vehicle and now often get carried away studying these over a weekend and am heavily involved with several specific forums. I kind of like the safety aspect too that most all of this stuff has to be done properly. Not sure if I am saving money what with buying the tools and parts for OCD maintenance!

I used to have a special interest in "cannon fodder tactics"
I have in fact, written an article about cannon fodder tactics, in relation to a medieval battle game.
The goal is how to utilize mass waves of men/peasants to defeat an enemy army, in a battle.

Well my primary interest is computers...Obviously a moderately expensive hobby but thankfully I'm more interested in the software side of things. I do spend a good bit of money a month on server hosting costs for my services and stuff I operate for fun. I also have an interest in micro-soldering which means expensive microscopes, hot air stations, and other equipment. I think most of the time my spending isn't getting in the way of the bills but once I hit full on obsession in something my wallet may potentially suffer for it.

Micro soldering is a very useful skill! Congratulations!

This year I spent roughly $1000 on golf clubs, even though I had a perfectly fine set of clubs last year!
Not surprisingly I know a lot more about golf clubs than anyone except people who do that for a living. They are called golf club fitters. They look at your swing and Trackman data and suggest what custom clubs you need for your swing.
I've learned to how to shop for golf clubs so I'd get really good deals. Instead of spending big bucks at a golf club fitter I can now buy bargain priced stuff that works just as well. At the end of the season I can buy like new clubs at closeout prices. :D
