Shopping is Torture
I've just recalled that about 5 years ago I had a list of things I'd like to buy when I could afford to buy them. It was a sheet of paper where I used to add new things (or wipe out things I thought to be useless) - I remember the list (very long, sometimes containing even more than 80 things I was planning to buy) contained leather purse, "Stephen King's two books - doesn't matter which ones", a small monster head made of rubber I had seen in a joke shop and many other things I don't remember now.
yes and I have been shopping through Amazon for a year and a half to deal with my state of the household because Amazon has good prices. It has really changed my life against my natural will and personality. One does need stuff to effect change and create some things. I have no kitchen cupboards to call my own nor do I have the dining room buffet (it is filled with once viewed dvds and tapes of tv serials taped off of fuzzy local access that have NEVER been viewed.) I am going to box them so I can have Thanksgiving dinner spread out though. I don't care about the holiday but I dread my mother's conduct in the kitchen this week if she is prepping for it and I would rather have my backup meal cooked before she begins cooking.
Shopping like Top 40 songs seems very manipulative to me.
I'm definitely not trying to start a fight, a debate, or derail the thread, and this is not directed at you CerisLy because I know that a lot of people order from Amazon, you just happen to be who I'm quoting.
I personally stopped ordering from Amazon about a year and a half ago because by:

I've decided to permanently boycott Amazon because they refuse to be ethical and stop selling these magazines voluntarily, and will only do so if the Humane Society of the US wins its lawsuit against Amazon. I was very disheartened by the response to the email that I sent Amazon regarding this situation a year and a half ago.

That is horrible. I had no idea. Why on Earth would Amazon continue to sell those things?
I don't know what to do, as I like Amazon (but hate that they support Republicans). Why on Earth do they have to do that? Well, I'll have to figure out somewhere else to buy stuff

Yeah, what I can't figure out is are they really making a lot of money off the subscriptions they sell for these magazines? Why is it such a big deal to keep selling them rather than just be ethical?
I hated making the decision to stop using Amazon, because they do have good prices and a large selection. But my conscience just won't let me order from them anymore. I've started using Buy.com most of the time now.
I'm pretty sure I look like a jerk a lot of the time. I get in a bad mood when I have to deal with the overwhelming sensory load. People aren't moving efficiently or doing what they should be. People are having mini family reunions in the aisles that are already too crowded. It's HARD for me to regard people in a less than sh*tty manner when all of this is going on. One of these days someone I know is going to see me acting like that, and I'll feel humiliated. Thing is, I might never know it. When I'm in that zone, people are just sensory interference.

I've never used them before. Are they a decent site? I mean they're sort of similar, selling new products and stuff? I'm uncomfortable switching, but if they're a similar type of site I'll try them out. I can't find too much info about them on their site.
I wonder if I should somehow complain to Amazon, tell them I'm going to switch?
I went shopping the other day for the first time since last summer. All I needed to buy was a christmas present for my Mum, and I'd already planned what to get her, and my boyfriend needed jeans. And yet the whole experience left me feeling terrible!
I kept seeing things that I'd quite like to buy, but couldn't afford. Instead of just saying "Oh well" or just buying them anyway, I moaned the whole time, weighing it up in my head, feeling incredibly guilty for even considering buying things when I'm unemployed. Then I felt guilty about ruining the day for my boyfriend. I also kept getting stressed and having to find somewhere quiet to sit. Then there's my problem with food, which meant walking around for almost an hour trying to find somewhere that served vegetarian food, that wasn't a multinational and that didn't cost much. In the end we got chips from a fish and chip shop.
We got home and then I felt all empty that we'd spent almost a whole day in Manchester and all we had to show for it was a pair of jeans and one christmas present.
I have no idea how I'd go shopping with children, especially for clothes.
I don't like shopping either ... in my case it the crowd thing . Nothing like sick , snot-nosed brats sneezing all over you while they fight with their siblings at the top of their lungs to really make your day .
I hate crowds so I work at a local sports arena that seats over 20,000 ...hows that for irony . Of course , my wife works at WalMart part time to boot .
Well , if ya don't laugh you'll probably cry . Life's funny that way .
I had the most wonderful shopping experience today--- no, this is not a joke. I dread Christmas shopping, and department stores/malls at the holidays are awful. Crowds, overpriced goods and no parking spaces!
I noticed some new store opened up near me, and my sister mentioned it's great ( she has one in her town). I go early in the morning to this place. Parking spots--- plenty of them. I go inside--- NO people except the people who are working, and they let you shop instead of badgering you. And the prices were so low. And they had everything under one roof--- I could do all my X-mas shopping at this place. So I did most of it right there. Even after an hour there were still barely any people there and the aisles were wide open so I could walk with ease. There was also a special--- shop over $50 worth of stuff and you get $20 off your next purchase. So I'll be going back there On Saturday to finish my X-mas list ( I never shop on Black Friday).
I never thought shopping near Christmas could be anything but horrible. But I was pleasantly surprised this year. I can say that I am not upset or exhausted or drained this time around--- WEEEEEE!

Hey Wolfpup, sorry it took me awhile to get back to this thread. Buy.com has similar prices but nowhere near the amount of customer reviews that Amazon does. If I want to buy something I'll sometimes check the customer reviews on Amazon to make sure I'm getting a good product, but I'll always purchase elsewhere.
I tried complaining to Amazon and they didn't seem to care about losing my business. I'll PM you what I wrote to them and what their response was.
I HATE shopping. An NT girl I used to work with once mused that most guys don't seem to like it. (Like most girls do?! *stereotype alert!*). The fluorescent lighting, stuff crammed into shelves in one big sea of shiny stuff, sales people asking me if I need help, (*unarticulated* If I want your f**king help I'll ask for it, thank you!) For me the worst is the noise--nauseating "music," one or more screaming/whining kids which prompts other kids to join in, people talking loudly to be heard over the noise, etc. I try to support smaller/independent/local merchants as much as possible, saving the big box stores for better prices or things I can't get elsewhere. I'll generally plan where I'm going to go before leaving the house- right down to the route I'll take- and I'll get in and out as quickly as possible. I try to go during off hours as much as possible when the crowds are mostly gone. Since I'm always on a limited budget I'll take a calculator with me as well as my shopping list so that I can keep track of expenses before getting to the register. (This also helps me get most of what I need sparing me the embarrasment of having to put something back when I get to the register.) I don't stop to browse or strike up a conversation with anyone. However, like others here, I dearly love bookstores. I can browse in a quiet setting and sit down and read for a while. If I'm hungry I can get a sandwich and coffee in the coffee shop area and return to my browsing/reading.
