I have a terrible time with alot of these internet acronyms, about the only one I prefer to use is RTFM, and OMFG. I don't like using these bastardizations of the english language, which I feel is turning english into a language of simpletons.

This is true sometimes, though occasionally we do get some truly unique chatspeak creations.

Membersix, I think humor just isn't that great at being conveyed online. I personally know I find just about everything hilarious which kind of pisses off my friends. :)

I use chatspeak a lot less than I used to. Once in a while, I'll use one, but I prefer emoticons generally.

That being said, I do have a sense of humor. However, it's a bit weird, and not in line with what other people find funny. I've literally gone an entire comedy movie without laughing, and on the other hand, found things to be hysterically funny that other people have just stared blankly at without reaction.

OK, if no one is going to explain to me what most of these acronyms mean, can anyone just anyone put the most improtant together on this board with their explanation..sort of glossary thing. PLEASE? Or at least point out where they are explained????
I thought this board would be different, I have asked this question on other boards or chat rooms and people just roll over you, no explanation whatsoever....damn

Ok Loborojo, explanation time.

There's hundreds but most of them are crap, so you can ignore them.

These ones are actually important - sort of

Humor
LOL = Laughing Out Loud
ROFL = Rolling on the Floor Laughing
LMAO = Laughing my ass off

Shock
OMG = Oh My God!

Confusion
WTF = What the f..k

Other Stuff
BTW = By the Way
IMO = In My Opinion
IMHO = In My Humble Opinion
AFK = Away from Keyboard
TTFN = Ta-Ta for Now (bye)

If you just remember some of these, you'll get by - everything else can be ignored or translated in context. Don't worry too much about it.

Most people don't abbreviate because most people prefer to type out the full word so no presumption is made and the point far clearer. Nothing wrong with spending time in what needs to be said

MSN shorthand topic

I come from a time when people wrote letters and used exclamation marks and other forms of grammatical punctuation to explain feelings. Letter writers also knew what each looked like and how they talked so that explaining feelings was not a priority. I have only recently learned (past two years) how to use emoticons and I do use them. But MSN shorthand like LOL, etc is not my cuppa tea or java.

BTW, Strapples' site has emoticons for LMAO and ROFL, among others. 8)

My children use the MSN shorthand and are chastened by teachers when they use it in assignments. It is a no-no! :lol:

There are three major (variations of english) languages on the internet spoken today

1. Chanspeak (Lolcat/Kitty Pidgin is part of this)
2. Imspeak
3. 1337

they tend sometimes to be combined; mainly imspeak and 1337

EDIT: wiki has a list of this.

EDIT: Lolcat is Chanspeak. Well Part of chanspeak
