I've been absent with computer problems, family problems and there may be some more hiccups, but for now,I have a little more time, online.

Got my upgrade on camera, plus Lightroom + Elements software, now wading thro' tuns of "experimental" pics.

AC132 Wow ! I just got my 40D,first DSLR,and try to get out any day I'm at home, for at least an hour,to get used to it.
Btw,what lens do you have on it ? My only ($) is the 50mm 1.8 - and its great, but may borrow the kit one from my bro for the weekend,to see how it performs.(we are a 2 40D family - with 2 lenses between us !)

rbs VERY nice shots, love the expression on his face ! I understand about directing people - even shooting friends is hard for me,unless I can get them to

1 - shut up
2 listen
3 trust me- I can see thro' the viewfinder - that pose is NOT flattering ! !

I prefer street photography, where no posing or interaction needed.I'm not diplomatic enough for models :(

MrMisanthrope - that sunset is awesome !

Greentea, you do not take ugly photos ! !
-I like both of those you link to.

This shot was badly over-exposed,so playing with, attempting rescue and came up with this...

Great! This thread is just what I need right now...

I was just about to bring on THIS RELATED THREAD but this thread was faster to pop up

Hi DustyLens, nice to meet you. The photo of yours above is wonderful. Very artistic made!
Maybe you can help me out a bit. I want to buy a new camera and Im so uncertain on what to choose, if I should give it a go for a real SLR cam or just take another compact one or something in between, like this one:

Image

For some reason I feel all cams named "powershots" "coolpix" and such is made for dumb photographers who doesnt know what they are doing. Unfortunately I might belong to this category as I in fact dont know anything about technical stuff around cameras. Im just very very very very keen to make good and high quality photos.....and this suddenly dont make sense...

Anyway, what brand is your camera? What made you choose it and why?
Any recommendations to me on what to choose and not. Im a "Canon photographer" and tend to stay with this brand. But If Nikon brings on something that might fit me perfectly then Im not impossible to deal with....

I digged through this thread from the beginning and see it would be appropiate to introduce my relationship to photography.
Im not professional and have never been. I have been into photography since my mid teen years. Im just a "love to bring my camera everywhere I go" kind of photographer hm....for that purpose then a new compact would be best...

But I also love to take time with my photos at the scene and I use to choose unusual angles to get diffrent perspectives. I also like a lot to print out big posters of my photos (my wall here is filled them)

I take all kinds of photos, but some favourite subjects has been weather, trains and cats. I travel regularly and always take a huge amount of photos while out
and I strongly dislike to use the flash. The problem with that is that Im so stubborn with not using it even in difficult light conditions when I really need it. My last trip in winter gave me loads of crappy photos due to that.....
Why I hesitate to get myself a SLR cam is the fact its so huge. I dont like to carry a lot of things around and also I want to be able to bring on the cam quick and also I worry that I would feel very uncomfortable with such a cam. My social phobia tells me that I will be more "visible" carrying around it....

and oh yeah. I found a SLR cam that might could suit me but its brand new on the market and wont allow me to buy it due to its cost: Olympus E-620

DustyLens, that photo is amazing!

I've started a Photography course and my photos have improved some due to learning light metering. I still haven't discovered the secret to sharp photos and getting bright colors.

Padium,I love that shot ! !

Hey xalepax,good to meet you,

A new camera is a very hard thing to advise another on,but maybe I can give you an idea from my own search.

I'd been studying the Canon Rebel series, looking good, until I got my hands on one,at a local store & felt they were just not strong enough for my needs - lots of rain, humidity where I live - so I looked @ Sony ( higher ISO range - think better in lower light, which I need ) - great reviews by owners, etc and the next week,Sony local dealership gave me grief about my warrenty work - I had to wonder if I wanted to stick with that brand.
Shame, cos they had a sweet 2 lens deal on the Alpha200,under a thou, but still would need extra battery,cards,bag...

My Bro has a Canon 40D,much heavier, but a nice camera, much stronger - so when I saw a used one come up @ a local store with a good rep, called it in & picked it up that day.I got my deal, with all the stuff I needed, but only had money left for one lens - the 50mm 1.8 II,cheap, sharp and good for my purposes.(I can borrow from my bro, too,we plan to share lens costs. )

I'm afraid if you settle for anything less than DSLR,you may outgrow it,before expressing you talents to satisfaction...it happens a lot.
BUT - there are some cameras with amazing skills, not DSLRs that might suit you - Canon G10 ,Nikon Coolpix are awesome - (I didn't include my current Sony,as I feel its rating is over-rated,the others beat it)
try reading up on them ?
Googling sites with USER reviews - much more for a buck than you might expect - and the Rebels are amazing, getting better & cheaper, all the time - May 09 sees a new Rebel out that guys are raving about - and I would have waited for it,if i wasn't so worried about my camera user lifestyle and the number of times crowds have smacked me in the camera during shows....I'm no professional, and need to watch my pennies, keep my gear a long time.

I love my new Canon, inseparable, this week out in the fields, shooting the harvest, trying to get pics of my 3 adopted kittens,
it gets me out of bed early ,most mornings....good luck, let me know how it goes for you ?

Nice camera choice. I love my 40d. I might upgrade it soon, but it's still a great camera. Just my kind of photography needs the most powerful camera.
I'm also starting to do film photography as a hobby. When my Zenit 3 slr arrives I might go for a walk with it and see what photos I can get. I'm not into urban photography, like streets and stuff. I like landscapes though. I'm also very good at people photography, either when they're not looking or they're so drunk they ask me to take photos. Oh and I might become a club photographer soon. $100-$200 a night, which isn't enough to live on but will look good on my CV.
I'm starting a collection of vintage cameras. I have a Zenit 12XP, the Zenit 3 is even older than that by about 20 years. I also have a Kodak Brownie Flash II and because I'm giving my friend a Canon 350D starter kit I will get a Kodak Brownie Flash I and Kodak Baby Brownie. And there are some medium formats in an antique shop that I may one day purchase.

Hi and thanks for your reply. You got yourself a great solution when sharing the lenses with your bro!

My husband have just bought himself a compact Canon digital Ixus 870 so I wont be able to share anything with him the nearest future.
I had an earlier version of an Canon Ixus for about two or three years. I used it very very intense and it died suddenly this winter on my favourite place when I was about to attach a tripod to it...
Since then I have concidered a SLR cam but worry about its size. After all Im a very spontanious photographer. Who likes to keep the cam in the pocket and bring it on fast when I see a spontanious spot.
But I also miss to be able to take photos in a very wide perspective and also the deepth that only SLR cams can give. This really devides my interest in photography in two parts. I know that the idealic would be to have one SLR and one compact one to complete my needs but my money wont allow that at this moment and I have to choose ONE camera.
I have keept an eye on the G10 model. If that can take vide panorama photos but also macro with deepth then thats the one to buy...but I know also what you mean with outgrowing something. That happens with my video cameras "all the time"....

xalepax, you may benefit from this: http://www.anandtech.com/digitalcameras ... spx?i=3253

^The world's smallest dslr. Olympus is a great brand too. My Canon 350d is small and lightweight too. I'm giving it to a friend though.
