In many regards I guess its because trains often symbolize what we have trouble with. Choice and options.

Playing with trains are simple. they go forward or backwards. And us beautiful to just watch running.

Played a lot of transport tycoon as a kid as well. With many toys you have to decide what and how to play.

Trains are just simple, elegant and straightforward.

I love trains. The town we moved to is literally surrounded by train tracks which I'm very happy about. And there's a big train station nearby. I can't wait until we ride the train to Vancouver Canada.

I have no interest in trains either. One of my obsession is with interstate highways, although as I age I like leaving home less and less.

I was really into Thomas the Tank Engine when I was a kid, still have all my trains and tracks too. I still find them interesting along with all other forms of transportation. Now if it was cars and motor vehicles instead of trains then that would be what I am obsessed with.

I've been doing model railroading since I was a kid - subject to a severe limit of funds available. I phase in and out of interest, currently not interested. During one of my phases I developed computer boards that handled signaling and turnout controls for a local N gauge layout.

I enjoyed riding trains in Europe when I used to go there in business in the 1980's. The few times I've given Amtrak a chance I've been disappointed.

I actually hated Thomas as a child, because the idea of trains having faces wasn't logical to me, and made me very uncomfortable. I still hate Cars, and all those children's movies with faces on things that shouldn't have faces. I love horror movies, but children's shows disturb me. :?

As for NORMAL trains, and train sets, I did love those as a child. Whenever we would go to the bookstore that had one, I would have a major freak out if I didn't get to play with it for at least a half hour. I also loved making geometric shapes with those magnet things, and would try to build ones that could hold heavy amounts of weight the best.

I love trains. I can't summon the enthusiasm to learn all the minutiae of their history and operation though. I just like visiting heritage railways. Like my other passions my interest in trains comes and goes.

I was introduced to railways early through a train set and the Rev W Audrey Railway Stories.

I love dinosaurs too and I was introduced to them very early in life.

I wonder if there is anything particular about this subjects that resonates with autistic people or whether it is just that we found them very early on and we never outgrow the childish excitement and sense of security that they gave us?

I do like the song "Train, Train" by Molly Hatchet though.

In my baby boomer lifespan I was able to catch the tail end of the Pullman era of luxury passenger trains in my childhood. Rode the Superchief, and the El Capitan, out west to visit relatives out west.Dined in the dining cars, slept in the berths, sat in the observation car domes to see the scenary. Not Amtrack trains. Pullman trains- with the dedicated staff. The real deal. Train travel how it spose to be. You can get a hint from classic movies like North by Northwest. After that experience its impossible NOT to love trains! They were the most fun form of transportation for my sister and I back in our childhoods.

that sounds real lovely^^ :)

one of my best childhood memories would be riding the Pacific Surfliner to my grandmothers house when she lived in LA.

there is also an antique (i think) passenger car on display by the local train station, i've tried to climb it once or twice.

I love trains, both real and models of them.

I belong to a model railroad club and we all go out on trips to watch real trains and photograph them. I think quite a few of the members of this club are on the spectrum although they are older and are not diagnosed.

Attending model railroad (and general train) conventions, you will realize there is some truth to this stereotype as a great many people (more than average in my opinion) attending these conventions will have ASD traits.

Of course this does not mean all people on the spectrum like trains, but based on my experience it is not uncommon.

I had some interest in trains as a kid but they were never my main interest. I'm not interested in them anymore.
