I'm lucky that I have a very boyish figure, I wear what is comfortable but will make the effort when needed - not every day though.

It's interesting that with my recent diagnosis I am now looking more closely at what I wear, now I understand I can make adjustments to 'look' more NT. Some days I wear all male (or male looking) clothes without even thinking, I do like to look 'nice' as long as 'nice' does not get in my way.

I agree long hair is easy and if you need to you can do something nice with it. A nice clip will make all the difference to a boring ponytail, and as plaits are fashionable this year (what do you call them in the States) it only takes a couple of minutes and is not fussy at all.

I have a boring ponytail at the moment, I just can't function with hair in my face.

Short short short and wash'n'wear. It just needs so much maintenance otherwise. I have really thick hair, it feels more like an animal's mane than human hair to be honest. Hairdressers just go nuts over it, until they realize how hard it can be to work with it and then they try to ah, take a machete to the dense jungle so to speak. The problem is, I can only take so much of hairdressers and that jungle grows right back in faster than I can deal with another trip to them. So short enough that it's not making me get really hot and sweaty under there and honestly, when it's that thick it's gonna stick out any damned way it feels like regardless of whether I try product or not!

Wash and wear, although I always brush it thoroughly. I only wash it once or twice a week, though, unless I have an interview the next day. I sometimes wear hats, mostly if it's greasy, but if you have sensory sensitivities that won't work. Besides, I'm informed that it's rude to wear a hat at mealtimes, for some reason.

Ooh, I have the Emily Post book on etiquette from 1940's.

It's acceptable to keep your hat on until you get to your destination, so for an afternoon shopping and a quick coffee you could keep your hat on. But when you are 'home' or wherever you are intending to get to (formal dinner or stay with friends) then yes you should take it off!

I was a teenager in the 80's - it was the hair helmet for me! Gel and teasing and blow dryers and epic amounts of Aqua Net... that only lasted for about a year though. I gave up and went back to long and natural - I very rarely even touch a blow dryer anymore. My hair frizzes when I brush it so I finger comb and that's usually it.

Wind swept / bedhead is in right?

Not completely 'wash and wear', in that I blow-dry it for the sake of time.
I also tend to straighten it before I'm about to spend time in the company of an attractive member of the species. :P

In the past, my attitude towards hair-styling has ranged from complete indifference, which led to poor hygiene and an excess of tugs, to an obsession so powerful that it, along with some other things, resulted in me becoming a recluse. At the moment, the extent to which I bother about my hair is, for the first time in my life, quite healthy and normal. :P

I fought against straighteners for years, but when I finally got a pair (freecycle is great) I found them a wonder. They reduce my thick and bushy hair to something I can tame in a matter of minutes. If I need to make an effort I know it's time well spent and even if I put my hair in a pony tail afterwards it still looks better without the need for tonnes of yukky, sticky product.

I agree about the makeup. I don't wear makeup any more. I haven't for years. It just seems so fake. I don't wear fake nails or fake hair or fake eyelashes or fake boobs or have fake bleached teeth, so why paint on a fake face?

Nowadays it's all fake fake fake.

Since going makeup-free, I now get ZERO interest from men. It's kind of a relief.

Men are so weird. They declare they want natural beauties who are low-maintenence, and grumble when it takes us so long to get ready. But then put them in front of someone who looks like Katie Price and they'll start to drool and complain to you: "how come YOU don't look like that?"

You know what? SHE doesn't look like that, either, underneath that layer of crap.

Not wearing makeup is like having an auto-filter to get rid of 99.9999 percent of prospective suiters, who weren't worth the hassle.

My Mr Right will be a guy who genuninely prefers a plain-faced real woman, rather than a painted-face fake one.

I always think it's so unfair on men that we women are able to make instant first-date judgments on whether we perceive a guy's face to be handsome, because what we see is what we get. But they, poor things, have no idea if the long eyelashes and perfect complexion and rosy lips are actually real.

I am not diagnosed with AS but my hair is usually tied back into a ponytail. I never could get into spending hours a day styling my hair even when growing up. Other girls seemed to be obsessed with hair and make-up though. Make-up irritates my face when I wear it and I just can't get comfortable in it although I will suffer it if going somewhere formal for short periods.

I'm not good at being too girly as I prefer comfortable instead.

Wash and wear. I wash it every other day. In the colder months I have to blow dry or I'll get a headache. I have hair that is straight in some places wavy in others. So I have to run a big curling iron or flat iron to even it out. But I usually end up putting it in a ponytail or clip.

I had bangs growing up but as an adult I grew them out. Now I can't stand hair touching my face. I wish I was good at styling my hair. I hate the feeling of product because I run my fingers through my hair a lot. But if I didn't have clumsy hands I'd lose to be able to put it in curlers for a wet set. Curly hair is so pretty.

I have several books all about retro hairstyles, if only I could find a hairstylist who does them. But finding a new hairstylist is such a pain in the butt. I hate small talk and it's so awkward with most of them, they don't even keep rollers on hand any more. Just a dryer and round brush. Sorry ranting.

I comb my hair when it's wet and let it dry in the air. Then might try to braid it, but usually not.

I realise I've posted a lot on here today. But it's been good for me (not been a good day) so thany you.

Anyway, I've created another thread here http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp3501986.html#3501986 for retro hairstyles so this one can stay on topic.

Sorry to hear you're not having a good day, Jaffacakes.

Mine was crappy as well, but it's got better again now. Hope the same happens for you. :)

I don't usually make a huge deal about my hair. I wash it, dry it and tie it up away from my face (my hair ends up getting very long because I only really go to the hair dressers once a year). When I do go, I usually get a short(ish) hairdo. I've dyed it a few times, which is fun, but not fun once the colour gets all weird and the roots start showing. Although I think I might have the courage to get my hair dyed blue or something (because I've always wanted to do something weird like that).

I don't really ever wear make up. I used to wear a lot of eyeliner. I think i was trying to be Gothic (which I never pulled off, as lovely as that style is). I wear clothes for comfort and practicality, but that doesn't mean that I wear, like, track suits all the time. I like to dress well when I have to, of course (especially at my work).

I know loads of female autistics who do put a much greater effort into their appearance than I do, so obviously this doesn't apply to every autistic female.

I don't style my hair at all unless I'm going out on a special occasion or I'm making a video.

98% of the rest of the time it just gets pulled back (unbrushed usually) off my face with a hair tie.
