What do you think Alex?

A Wong Planet with a few other planets orbiting it?

Sounds kind of like Autistic Pride Day and Autreat combined, only bigger and possibly a lot more fun. I've never been to Autreat, mainly because it's held out in the middle of nowhere and I even live in PA. So, I definitely think there's advantage to making something as accessible as possible for people, if you want them to come.

Plus, we all know how important technology and the Internet is to the ASD community, so it seems fitting to have an event that includes, in some capacity, linking people together via technology or social media.

Exactly, and you can never have too much press and media coverage.

I've been speaking to the Doug Flutie JR. Foundation, The Thinking Person's Guide to Autism, Heartspring, Autism Asperger Publishing Company (who are publishing my book), Autism Speaks, Asperger Syndrome Education Network, and other orgazitations who seem very interested.

If we could get Hacking Autism involved and include a Hackathon... well, the sky is the limit.

I wonder if ASAN would be interested. Future Horizons?

I've sent an email to John Elder Robison and Kirsten Lindsmith. I'm about to send one to Ken G.

The more the better!

I know of two non-hotels in Portland that are big enough to host the conference.

Tell me what you think of these:

Nothing like those. This is something new and cool. I can tell there's a lot of excitement. We're already in talks to get major celebrities to attend (autistic celebrities who most don't even realize are on the autism spectrum.

Also, we're workigto get major corporate sponsors.

Lol, at first I misread that and thought you were saying you were going to invite celebrities who didn't realize that they themselves were on the autism spectrum. I was like, so, you're going to trick them into coming and surprise them with an ambush diagnosis? I have to admit, that would be pretty entertaining.

If Vegas is chosen as the "host city", the problem with Vegas is
some people here on Wrong Planet are parents and they may
bring their children along. The climate of Vegas may be
corruptive to young kids who come along with their parents.

I wouldn't be opposed to portland also, but I'm also in portland :)

I more support holding it in the Los Angeles metro area. I agree that vegas could be a bit overwhelming for folks.
Also LA has many more options, it's a huge area with lots of possible locations. There are also several good airports, increasing the possibility of finding a cheap flight (LAX, Long Beach, Ontario, Burbank, Irvine). Personally, as an aspie, I find LAX too much to deal with, so it's good to have 4 other smaller airports to travel through.

But Portland is a nice, peaceful city.

Still, my vote is for LA. But don't restrict options to just hollywood.

Agreed. If we project this event to be huge, we will need huge funding. Plus we need intensive planning if we want to push this through and make it a success. Planning should start as now.

I have an idea. Why not form committees as soon as possible, and go to the drawing board as we move along? We're here to support you all the way. :)

We need at least three big sponsors to donate 70-80k ( of services/money) each.

This reality show would make enough money to for a Wong Planet conference every year for ten years!

That's hilarious!

AA, I would also love it to be in Portland, too. But I know myself that the streets of Portland are difficult to navigate. I'm more inclined to do a city that is on a smaller scale.

I know it's probably futile, but I'm going to say Dallas again. Major international airport, several possible venues (nice hotels, event centers, et cetera), not super overwhelming (and I'd guess less expensive too) compared to LA or LV, other activities like shopping or museums or whatever interests people may have. . . . . . .

I'm very open to attending the conference
in a city other than Portland, but
try these for size...

since everybody is just posting their hometown I'm gonna advocate mine. DC is the capital and that would make our conference seem important if it was here. our prices are on the high side but not as bad as LV or LA. arlington marriott is good cuz its a little way out of dc and it is a nice big place for a convention. also there are plenty of convention centers and such around dc cuz its the capital.
