I had a difficult time learning to tie and untie my shoes. I remember when I was in kindergarten, one of the gym teachers helping me tie my shoes when they would come untied during P.E. I wore shoes with velcro for awhile.

Now, I mostly keep my shoes tied and slip in and out of them.

I still cant do it right and have to do it a weird way and Im 17. I have to make two bows (one with each lace) and cross then loop them.

Hard to explain, it was on room 101 in the UK. About 6 mins through this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b66zgoNjyK0

This. ^

I can tie them fairly easily, but always have to double knot..

A friend at work saw me retying a shoelace the other day and laughed to himself and said, "you know, I don't often see that. But I saw it just recently and I was trying to remember where. Then I realized, it was your son. You two are so alike." I have not told him about our diagnoses.

I got some Lock Laces for my son and now will get some for myself.

I didn't learn until I was 9. Same with riding a bike. My fine/gross motor skills were very delayed.

That sounds like the way I do it. I couldn't learn in kindergarten and wore velcro and didn't tie shoes until I was 14.

I was the only child in kindergarten who did not get a "shoe tying diploma" and my teacher told me it was my own fault because I wasn't paying attention. :(

I just learned how to tie shoes a few days ago, I'm not kidding. It's still very hard for me to do as I just learned it but it hopefully shall go easier the more I do it.

Didn't tie my shoes until I was 8, I think. I had a hard time learning it and for a while I used velcro shoes.

Yeah, I also didn't learn until grade 3 (8 years old). My third grade teacher said it was "ridiculous" that I couldn't tie my shoes and assigned a girl to teach me to do so.

I also learned rather late in childhood (I believe I was about seven) how to tie my shoes, and I also had to use the bunny ears method. I still get weird looks to this day with that method. My son has to wear velcro shoes still at twelve years old, he has no interest in tying laces and I gave up. I would rather lose a small battle than continually hound him about it and start a full-scale war.

I learned how at age five or so,but I tie them backwards.I never noticed till someone pointed it out.I was fascinated with knots and tied lots of them, this caused lots of aggregation with the adults.

I never heard of the bunny ear method so I had to look it up. I was never taught to do it like that. I was taught to go around the loop and it took me a while to remember how to do it.

I had velcro-shoes for a long time, too. I learned to tie my shoes by the age of eight, I think. And I used and still use the bunny ears method to this day. And I still double-knot them.

I didn't know how to tie my shoes for a looong time. I always used velcro. I forget when I finally learned (6th grade?), but I ended up tying them in a way that would always come undone. I eventually found out that I could "double tie" them (just doing one of the motions a second time) that would keep them on all day but make it a pain to take off.

More recently (was it this year?) someone asked if I used the "bunny ears" method of tying shoes because I was left handed. I said yea, and then went to go look it up. I looked at it for a couple minutes, practiced for maybe 10 minutes, and now my shoes are always tied perfectly :D. Much better than how it was before.
