see, this is why I think we need to make more noise. more people need to get informed about what this organization is getting away with.

If every single person with autism made noise about this (not all of us make noise either). We'd be looking at, oh, say 1 in 200 people. That's not very much. NT people will keep the stereotype created by these motherf*ckers at NBC or whatever. Autism is complicated to explain, and NTs have short attention spans.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Every change starts with one person. It all starts with a single voice. And 1 of 200 is a lot of people. About 1.5 million in the US alone. And they talk to people, and the people they talk to start talking to people...the number will grow exponentially. Fear thrives on ignorance. Reveal the truth of the matter, and people will start thinking differently. But if you don't say anything, nothing will change.

With certain other factors, it's probably less than 1 in 200 (some of us are cynical). How would I bring this up to other people though? I have no friends, and I am even more terrified of the stigma of coming out as AS/autistic after seeing those clips.

If someone famous and popular made it "cool" to be open minded and knowledgeable about autism, we'd become the most popular group of people within a weeks time. This is what Marylin Manson did for the gays/bi's during the 90's.

This is really stereotyping us. If we really don't have any power over this, then what's stopping them from making bully's pick on us more?

Also, I have not seen this video on commercials. And, NBC might get away with murder. Literally and figuratively.

I am not afraid. The stigma disappears when people actually get to know you, see you as an actual human being rather than some image projected by Autism Speaks and Company. And people are more apt to tolerate differences if they understand them. If you don't know anyone, write about it. Write to newspapers, magazines, blogs, forums---the internet is a great way to make your voice heard. You don't have to speak to communicate.

Perception is everything. Like snake321 said, if someone famous and popular made it "cool," then it would be accepted. If you don't stand up for yourself and what you believe, then people walk all over you.

I tend to volunteer my girls dx when making small talk with other parents at the park, or wherever. They're quite adorable, so, I figure I'm doing my small part in educating some of the lay public to the "horrors" of autism. The most common reaction I get is something like - gee, they seem like normal kids, to me!

I do this to counter the extreme negative stereotypes that this videos create. I'm not really that comfortable thinking that my neighbors assume that my life is a living hell and that I want to kill my children. So, when the opportunity presents itself, I often find myself volunteering my daughters condition, so that these people might see what autism looks like without all of the dramatic music and strategic editing.

Watching the entire thing, I felt like they deliberately put those children into high stress situations so they would have a meltdown. Who takes their kid to the swings when they scream and cry? What kind of human being does that? Then she complains that the other parents stare at her because they think she's hurting her child. Well, duh! If it's sensory overload you stupid twit, don't take her there. And the one who is an educator and laments that her son won't do the puzzle when she wants, but will do it in 30 seconds when he wants. Ummm, are you seeing the disconnect here? So she forces him to sit by the puzzle until he has a meltdown. It almost seems like they are feeding into the things that are causing overload for these kids. If the park is a trigger, avoid it. How easy is that?

I just don't get them. I think their entire problem exists because they insist on treating their kids as if they are normal instead of appreciating the fact that hey are just different. All I can say is that I'm glad I didn't grow up around these whack jobs.

Alex,

Was that like the content of the rest of the movie? What was the rest of it about? I haven't seen it.

Zanne

here's another cliip from the movie (this clip is even worse than the gw bridge cliip because theyre basically showing the American public that this is what autism is):

Kids don't have to be autistic to do that.

I see kids whine like that all the time. Every child is going to be a brat sometimes.

Not meaning to get off subject, but seems like they show only a few kids in these clips. well, there are a whole lot more of us just on WP forum alone with autism/asperger's. ain't statistically correct. that's like judging all skinny people have anorexia or something.

I don't understand. A woman goes public about having homicidal thoughts towards her daughter and social services doesn't rush in? Isn't this illegal? I mean, geez, if a high schooler said the same thing about a class-mate they'd be locked up immediately with half the town shut down. I'm honestly more concerned for that woman's children than for the negative apprearance of autism (though that pissed me off too).

It appreared to me that the other kids were all provoked. It reminded me of my 7th grade video production class when I locked my cat and dog in my parent's bathroom to get a bit of swat and hiss footage (no one was harmed or traumatised). But sensorily hurting your children to get media sympathy? They claim we are the ones without feelings or empathy, but look at them! If child is having meltdown because of overload, you don't pull, tug, and yell at him/her more!! If there is no immediate danger, just let it ride out and try to remove the stimuli. To hell with the gawkers! Do these people honestly care more about the flippant opinions of random strangers than they care about their own children's well-being?

These videos seem to be making a public excuse for abusing autistic children, because they're just so terrible, how could you not? The parents are acting like they're the victims. What BS.

they showed a lot of clips of it on national tv and it's giving people the wrong idea!! ! we're not like that ! This organization says "1 in 150 have autism" which is true.... But more than half of those people are high functioning despite the fact that Autism Speaks will make you believe otherwise!! (the NIH says 1 in 300 have aspergers which is already half even if you don't count all the HFAs). This Autism Speaks organization is using us to get lots of donations from the American public. The American public is starting to think what i just posted *is* autism.

and that my friends is the saddest excuse for a proper representation of autism I've ever seen in my ENTIRE LIFE.

Just because a kid is having a meltdown does NOT mean they are autistic and just because they are autistic DOES NOT mean they are having a meltdown.

I like Zanne's idea of locking an NT in a room...my suggestion would be abuot 20,000 decibles of death metal or some emo dude screaming his effing brains out...see if they don't have a meltdown then...
