Have to not piss people off so bad that they refuse to help. Don't know about you, but I need some help to get by. I'm fiercely independent, but can't do it all on my own.
Actually, I used to feel very strongly about this, very similar to thoughts expressed by OP. Then, I slowly realized there is some rhyme and reason to the conformity. It's needed because the world is very uncertain and, as bright as we humans are, we are not actually all that bright. It is very confusing to understand what other people mean, even for NTs (I have read books that say this). We use mental shortcuts to understand the world, including other people. We need them because we couldn't possible function if we had to examine each thing we encountered in detail as if we are seeing it for the first time.
Or, another way of looking at it is this. If you can use automatic, predefined behaviors when interacting with people, this frees up mental energy to focus on things that are more important to you. Why waste precious mental energy when you don't have to?
Of course, I am internally still a nonconformist. I meet necessary expectation in order to try to communicate effectively to get along in the world, but I live in my own beautifully bizarre inner world and love every minute of it.
