I wish I could still EAT. :|

what happened?

when you get to be my age with my genes, food becomes a frenemie at best, enemy at worst. I can't get away with eating anything that tastes good anymore. no more pizza, hot dogs/burgers/fishwiches, no more sweets [unless stevia or Splenda or NutraSweet or Ace/k], nothing yummy other than the odd morsel of low-sugar dark chocolate. a long list of no-nos my doc gave me after my last lab test showed bad liver values, excess cholesterol and malignant hypertension. :|

oh, i'm sorry. i also need to eat less of the things i love because i need to lose weight and improve some hormonal issues, but i'm just terrible on avoiding sweets and carbs.

when things came to a head with pre-diabetes metabolic syndrome and a buncha other health ills, to avoid having to stick myself with needles, I told meself that i'd "rather FEEL good than TASTE good," so the yummy foods went by the wayside. ANYTHING to avoid those needles! :o

I have gone from pre-diabetes to full on diabetes recently. I admit to not paying much attention to it originally, but I've crashed (sugar) a few times and I don't care for it at all. Problem is I am a VERY picky eater. I don't do veggies, salads, basically what they deem healthy. I am a carnivore aka steak and potato type. Most vegetable matter just tastes horrid to me not to mention the texture issues. This is one of the things I struggle with so I am looking for what is in essence a diabetic diet for carnivores. I am not eating balanced now, just trying to avoid the ups and downs. Not enjoying much of anything now as it seems to wreak havoc with my sugar. What to do?

first of all, you can avoid "white foods" made of stuff such as sugar, flour, starch, white potatoes, white rice, hominy grits, puddings, gravies, doughy stuff. i'm a big believer in v8 juice, they make a low-sodium kind now. it is edible if you just gulp the stuff down, either ice-cold, or room temperature, or hot [but not too hot as that destroys the vitamins in it]. IOW all the yummy food is off-limits. but again, would you rather "feel" good, or "taste" good? a simple choice, health or yummy food. can't have both. if you do this by itself, your sugars will stabilize. you can eat your steak [small cut] with a limited amount of sweet potatoes [much better for you than white], or butternut squash [much better for you than sweet potatoes], you can eat a lot more of the squash. avoid fruit juices above all, they are just liquid sugar. sugar is the enemy. wheat, even whole wheat, is basically sugar in the way the body metabolizes it, avoid those also. to replace the no-no foods, eat more squash, brown or wild rice, quinoa, buckwheat. shirataki noodles are harmless. add some beans to your diet.

For one you mention rice. I have been told NO rice due to being high in carbs. Sadly I love rice and that was causing me to crash on some afternoons. I've been told sugar and juices are to be used when one has crashed (low sugar). Small moderate amount just to bring the sugar up quickly until some good food takes over. I was told carbs are the enemy. Sadly aside from meat, I eat or did eat mostly carbs. Then I am told if I balance the carbs out with protein that it can be ok as well. So far I am struggling. Executive functioning leaves me in the dust as I normally eat very simple whatever I can grab quick and consume. Due to my age and numerous muscular-skeleton problems, it is difficult for me to cook. Add to the the neuropathy in my hands and I make a terrible mess. I used to love to cook but not for one. For just me it is too much trouble...

NOT white rice, brown rice or wild rice, has proportionately more protein and less carbs. don't eat ONLY brown rice, mix it up with the other things like quinoa and amaranth and buckwheat and squash and beans. make a meal out of it. I can't cook much either, slaving away over a hot stove is no fun. a crockpot or pressure cooker is your friend. set and forget. drink more v8 juice, can't get a simpler way to add veggies to your diet. the brown rice/quinoa and squash are relatively easy to prepare, you can get them pre-cooked and cut into cubes [squash]. just dump it all into a crockpot, set and forget. the crockpot will do most of the work for you while you do other things. you can make enough in a morning or afternoon of cooking to segment into Tupperware and freeze, just take one out to defrost and eat. I promise you that if you take small steps towards this, your blood sugars will improve, I was pre-diabetic meself, and now my blood sugars are thankfully normal.

I like my wife's cooking. Other than that I've always had a thing for ice-cream. Between age 10-12 I organised a list of potential ice-cream garnishes that reached about 2,800 entries.
