Hey Magicfly, I was thinking like you.. and trying to remember what the substance would be.. It dawned on me that there are several surfaces for roads... some roads have a certain amount of tar in them, others like in Florida, may have crushed shell as part of the substance.. Some roads are coated with pieces of rubber from recycled tires..

I guess there is definitely TWO ways to interpret that question alright.. maybe more..

My first thought was tarmac too

(.. maybe i was thinking: what goes on a road // what do you put on a road // road surface)

I just thought I'd share this. In the midst of my assessment my psychologist asked me,

"What goes on the surface of a road?"

She wouldn't give me any clues. I was a bit puzzled, and then I answered,

"The tarmac and then white lines"

Apparently, NT people will answer this question by saying 'vehicles/traffic'.

Most people with Aspergers will tend to say tyres.

I picked my answer because I figured that roads are made of several layers, and that the tarmac and white lines would make up the surface layer...

What answer do you get?

I would have answered very similar to you. That seems like a more appropriate answer. I would have either said tarmac, rubber or asphalt concrete (perhaps a mixture - don't know much about roads) and then add the lines and reflectors, etc. etc. I would have said it all depends. I would not have said cars!!

My answer was "asphalt"

but after looking at my reply, I realized a better answer would have been "snakes"

I would have said:

"Most roads these days are covered with asphalt, but some are covered with gravel, the texture and thickness of which may vary. And of course there are still some cobble-stone roads in select locations. In addition, I think it would be safe to assume that new and/or experimental road surfacing materials are currently being tested. Of course, as a cautionary disclaimer, I must add that road surfaces are not a special interest of mine. For more detailed and accurate information, please consult a more authoritative source."

Huh. No wonder my psychiatrist said I obviously have AS.

I am impressed. I can see my son saying something like that when he gets older. I love your answer.

Interesting. I would have said the same thing you did - rocks, tar, asphalt & paint for the lines.

A, neurotypical linear thinking - there is little distinction between a road and whatever land besides it. I would've interpreted that question as being what could go on a road ONLY. Which, considering you can take your car off-road, is very little.

That's how I originally read your first question, and my answer was "Tarmac". After I re-read it, and realised your OP said "surface", I still thought "Tarmac".

Cars didn't even cross my mind until I read the other posts.

WOW! MY first thought was asphalt or cement, and I originally thought about what would MAKE UP the road, but I guess they DID say ON, so lines or tires would have been more appropriate. I guess they couldn't tell you the why they were asking. 8-(

I surely would answer asphalt... but soon I'd realize that he could expect me to say "cars", but not sure. So I'd tell him that I don't undestand the question...

I suppose it all depends on the word 'goes', does it mean 'go' implying movement, or 'go' meaning 'is applied to, goes to make up' etc. I wonder why an aspie would go for the second option and an NT would choose the first, would a pedantic NT answer tarmac, or an imaginative aspie answer cars? Interesting.

And yes, if the sentence were in German the sense would be crystal clear, the case following the word 'on' would be different depending on whether movement is implied or not.

The phrase “goes on” throws me off. I think of “goes on” as something that gets applied to the surface so I thought asphalt at first. If the question was worded “What do you commonly find on the road?” I would think cars (or vehicles to be more precise).

Um if somebody asked me that, i would jus sit there and probably disappear into space, that question i just wouldnt know how to answer, she would prob have to ask me 10 different ways until i understand lol. I would probably say little rocks or something haha.
