Does anyone here actually not desire social contact?

I think cats view me as an extention of themselves.

Lol there was this chick in my highschool who believed that, and she seemed pretty effin awesome. I tried talking to her a few times though but it never really went very well. Then she moved away and no one knew where she went.

So there are schizoids, who are higher functioning than autistic people, then autistic people, some of whom have schizoid personality patterns and some of whom don't. Now all they have to do is drop the term Aspergers and that should clear up some of the confusion as to how AS relates to all this.

What about those with AS diagnosed as a child who grow up to avoid social contact? AS with SPD?

Mw99,

Thanks for the DSM list; note how it precludes a PDD. I guess the professionals I saw were projecting their ideals onto me, and assuming that I fit the same manifestation of AS* as others they see; many in this thread don't seem to be too keen on social interaction (I was betting that there'd be quite a few like there is).

I don't think a PDD is necessarily precluded.

Does not occur exclusively during the course of schizophrenia, a mood disorder with psychotic features, another psychotic disorder, or a pervasive developmental disorder and is not due to the direct physiological effects of a general medical condition.

From that I understand that you can have a PDD and Schizoid PD symptoms, and still have Schizoid PD, as long as the Schizoid PD symptoms don't occur only during the course of the PDD. Then again, PDD is a life long condition, isn't it?

In other words you cannot have a schizoid personality disorder and AS... A diagnosis of AS rules out a diagnosis of schizoid personality disorder?
In the future this might change when AS becomes an ASD not PDD.

I thought AS was an ASD. :? Hence the "spectrum" talk around here. Also, isn't autism a PDD? Pervasive Developmental Disorder.

I think "schizoid" is more than just avoiding social contact - there seems to be a pattern of traits, including asociality, sensitivity and lack of empathy. Someone on the spectrum may grow up to avoid social contact because they don't want any, or because they want social contact but can't cope. So I guess it depends.

I read in another thread (one about the DSM-V which isn't finished yet) that AS is currently a PDD but that will change. AS will be under the ASD umbrella in the next DSM.
Classic autism is a PDD, that will not change.

I'd get bored to death without someone to at least do something with.

Aha, thanks for clarification.
