Not all attention is detectable though. If comments are entertaining, insightful, amusing, or interesting, to someone, but that someone has nothing to contribute, should they spam up the board with laughing smileys (emoticons) and "me too" comments in every instance?
A few here and there are fine, but if everyone posted these things every time they felt them, then it'd get way over the top.
So while most people would do these things some of the time, I expect most people avoid doing it too much of the time (as evidenced by the fact that even though most posters do these things some of the time, the boards are not "spammed" to choking point with meaingless emoticon and me-too posts).
If reading is attention, then plenty of posters get more attention than they could guess. I've seen posters convinced no one even notices or knows who they are, but I've been aware of them for a long time, tend to read their posts, and appreciate their participation.
If no one makes a song and dance it does not necessarily follow that no one has noticed or appreciated what was posted.
For instance, here is an example of attention I did not know I had.

Yes, yes I do wish to destroy them. Them equating to you (yes, you).
Do you mean you wish to destroy
me, personally?
Now how nice is that?
I did not even know you'd noticed me Danielismyname, much less cared so much. It gives me warm fuzzies to think of you wishing my destruction, you adorable cold headed Australian.
I feel so honored to receive this unexpected recognition and attention; I'd like to thank my family, the fans (all imaginary) who stuck by me when I thought no one read my posts, the moderators who protected my paper thin ego from personal attacks, and of course Alex who made all this possible.
