I think I agree with Greentea.

Although a houseparty sounds absolutely wonderful, as LotusBlossom and Erminea said, especially in the Dordogne or Brittany, where there are some large and beautiful houses in gorgeous countryside, it would necessarily be a far more personal thing.

Kind of why I am suggesting some day meetups beforehand.

Even the biggest houses, and I've been looking at some, wouldn't sleep more than 20-25, even with people sharing, sometimes four to a room in family rooms. And even if they work out cheaper for sleeping accomodation than B&Bs, around £100 each for 5-7 nights, food would add a lot onto that.

20-25 is more than enough for a meetup, tbh once it comes to crunchtime I doubt we would even get that many ppl.
Quote:
Also there would not be anyone in charge to go to if there were problems about cooking or sleeping arrangements. What if we didn't get on?

Give everyone their own room and if things go badly wrong order in takeaways. Or go for somewhere which is catered.

I was initially a bit taken aback by Greentea saying she wouldn't attend if it was in a house, but although I would not be worried for my personal security I think there could be simple personal comfort issues with people I didn't know in such an unstructured situation/environment, ( remembering some house-shares I have participated in ).

I would love to do that sometime with people from WP that I had already met once or twice, but I think that I would actually be more able to relax in the structured environment offered by Autscape, which nevertheless allows a lot of personal freedom while respecting everybody's needs.

I think it will be full of Auties tbh - feel free to try it though.

I remember having a lot of fun on college and university field trips where the basics, regular food and peaceful sleeping accommodation, were assured, but where outside of course activities we were free to do anything we wanted.

I too felt put off by the Autism slant to Autscape, but the info says that it is for people anywhere on the spectrum; what is to stop us contributing to/creating a Wrong Planet atmosphere there? I might even be ok with a shared room. And the price is very reasonable, as Greentea points out, seeing as all food is included.

I think it would be unfair of us to hijack it in such a fashion.

I don't think that it would be anything like school, for one thing nothing is obligatory except respect for others. ( I don't understand why you think we would be "funding a public school" Kangoogle. :? )

Autscape last year took place in one of those schools, ffs. I really object to funding those places.

I'm on for meeting other WPers at Autscape, and look forward to it immensely. :D

Here is the link to the site again:

.

By all means go, but I think a separate meet more aimed at people on this site would be better.

Deal, then, ouinon.

Now all we have to do is convince as many WP members to attend too, so we'll be all together there... Maybe we should start a new thread: "WP meet-up at Autscape Retreat"??

Plane tickets to Europe for less than 7 days are only at Business Class prices here, so I'll have to stay for a week anyway. I'll probably spend 3 days in London, in case someone wants to share a room in London before/after Autscape.

Another advantage of Autscape is that people can attend on a day only basis, so people who don't want/can't afford to stay the night can still enjoy the event/meet other AS.

.

Meeting people with AS really isnt difficult though - having a fun group get together is slightly harder though.

Most of us on the continent can't afford to do that.

If you did that most of the big houses would only house 8-10 people, tops, but still cost the same, and takeaways are not cheap.

How would we be hijacking it? It is an event for people on the spectrum. :?

In what way is Autscape not aimed at people on WP?

True, but most UK ppl on WP can. Even if not everyone knows everyone, I doubt there will be a problem.

Compared to the room prices and getting out there, they are. Asides I think we would be able to get lots of charitable funding which would pay most expenses.

Even if we go, I really doubt its the best place for a band of highly functioning people.

Its very unfair if a group of 20 or so of us show up who already know each other - even NT's would be uncomfortable at a ready made clique showing up at an event, let alone ppl on the spectrum.

Its not directly aimed at us really - its not really going to be a brilliant place for a load of high functioning people to ascend on.

Depends on the timing, but I'll love to. Just have four weeks in july, so I have to plan it to fit into that. I like to travel, so if I can, yes.

You may have a point, kangoogle. I'm afraid of feeling too different there, again same story as with NTs. Are there any Asperger's conventions in Europe ever??? I might hold out for one of those, actually.

Where exactly is "autscape"? I´ve never even heard of it before. Can you describe it?

Maybe I´m odd, but I really don´t like the idea of sharing a room with someone I don´t know. I don´t know...sort of like Greentea´s sharing a house thing. The idea of it just makes me uncomfortable...it could be okay, but then again...what if it´s not?

Hmmmm....I was sort of hoping for a holiday in France or Italy...

If we can get enough firm commitment, then its very doable. Someone would have to put the effort into setting one up mind.

Now that might be cool. If anyone knows of some such thing, let us know...I would be interested in something like that too.

I´d do that too! Or Norway sounds good. My relatives are from there, I´m actually part Norwegian. I could discover my "roots".

Has anyone here actually BEEN to Autscape and KNOW "who else" goes, whether or not it is "suitable for a load of high functioning people" or not, and how many of the others already know each other, ... from previous Autscape events for instance?

But Morgana, you live in Germany, don't you?
